BANDON, Ore. - Junior Nick Sherwood carded a 1-under 70 on Friday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for third place after the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore.
Sherwood had four birdies and three bogies at the par-71, 6,718-yard Bandon Trails Course and is tied for third on the individual leader board and just two strokes back of clubhouse leader, Jonathan Woo of Oregon, heading into Saturday's second round.
"Nick Sherwood was very good today and had a rock solid round," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "I think he only had one bad hole when he had a silly three-putt, but other than that, he played very well."

The Beavers shot a 7-over 291 on Friday and trail No. 3 Washington (even-par 284) and No. 9 Oregon (3-over 287) and are tied with Long Beach State in the 15-team field.
"The conditions were absolutely perfect for the first 14 or 15 holes," Reehoorn said. "The last three holes, and the last six holes for Alex (Moore), the rain started coming down hard. Nick and Alex had to putt through standing water on their final hole. We did okay today, but we didn't take advantage of how good the weather was before it started raining.
"Washington and Long Beach State were finishing when we were making the turn so they didn't have to play in the tough conditions," he added. "We didn't finish how we wanted, but at the same time, we are still right there."
Senior Casey King and junior Matt Rawitzer are both tied for 19th after finishing with a 3-over 74 and senior Alex Moore and junior Nick Chianello each shot a 4-over 75 for a tie for 35th.
Sherwood was one of only six players of the 85 competing to finish with an under-par round after carding birdies on the par-3 third, par-4 13th, par-5 16th and par-3 17th holes. Woo shot a 3-under 68 to lead the tourney, while Charlie Hughes of Washington is second after a 2-under 69 and Eric Sugimoto of Pacific, Oregon's Robbie Ziegler and Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington are tied with Sherwood for third with 1-under 70's.
"The course is a lot tougher than I thought it would be, considering the low score was 3-under today," Reehoorn said. "It's so hard to get the ball close to the hole. We need better play from Alex tomorrow, and I expect him to bounce back and have a solid round."
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with tee times off the first and 10th tees and can be followed with live scoring at golfstat.com.
