PERSONAL—Born 11/15/80 in Sacramento, CA...son of Kevin and Susan House...married to former Katie Millen on August, 4, 2001...his father is a sergeant in the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and his mother is a solution rep at Marshall Hospital...he has a younger sister and brother, Sheila, 20, and Steven, 17...he is in the College of Health & Human Performance and is an exercise & sport science major...he entered Oregon State with a 3.80 GPA out of El Dorado High School...enjoys backpacking, four-wheeling, all sports and youth group...member of National Honor Society, Letterman’s Club, Renaissance Club and California Scholastic Federation...his biggest athletic thrill to date has been being recruited by Oregon State to play football...selected OSU because, “My goal is to play in the Pac-10 and Oregon State was the first Pac-10 school to offer me a scholarship. I liked the location of the school, the coaches, the players I had a chance to meet, the staff and campus life.”
OSU—(2002—Junior)—Shayne entered spring drills with high hopes after rehabbing all summer and winter from a second surgery on his right shoulder...however, during the first day of spring drills pain in his right shoulder once again forced him to the sidelines...Shayne made a couple of more appearances in spring drills, but the results were always the same...he was unable to throw with any velocity and without pain...the decision on his future as a quarterback has not been reached as of media guide press time, but basically he has been unable to throw a football for the past two years...Shayne was able to participate in winter conditioning and posted good weightlifting marks of 405 in the back squat, 240 in the bench press and 220 in the power clean...his best vertical jump mark was 31.5 inches.
(2001—Sophomore)—After missing the entire 2000 season after arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, Shayne was looking forward to spring practice and an opportunity to finally show his stuff…Shayne went into spring drills as the No. 2 quarterback as starter Jonathan Smith was out of spring drills due to postseason surgery on his broken left wrist…Shayne struggled during spring drills as his right shoulder still hampered him to the point he could not get any velocity on his passes…he completed only one pass in four attempts in the first scrimmage for 14 yards…he completed his only pass for 6 yards in the second scrimmage and in the spring game he was 1-for-2 for 2 yards…he had additional surgery on his right shoulder during the summer and was forced to sit out the 2001 season while rehabbing his shoulder...in the winter program, Shayne posted a squat lift best of 365 pounds…he had bests of 225 in the bench press and 253.5 in the power clean.
(2000-Redshirt Freshman)-Shayne reported to spring drills listed as the No. 4 quarterback...he did not throw the football during winter conditioning in an attempt to get over the tendinitis problem in his right shoulder...he was much improved when spring drills started and he was in the thick of the quarterback battle...Shayne was able to claim the No. 2 spot on the depth chart by the final week of spring drills...he returned to fall camp listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind returning starter Jonathan Smith...however, he continued to have shoulder problems during fall camp and had an MRI exam which determined he had a tear in his right shoulder…he had athroscopic surgery on September 28 for labral repair…as a result of the surgery, Shayne missed the entire 2000 season…Shayne had some outstanding moments during the four spring scrimmages, but also showed he had a lot of work still ahead of him, not surprising from a redshirt freshman...in the four spring scrimmages, Shayne competed as the No. 4 quarterback in the first two scrimmages and moved up the ladder in scrimmage No. 3 and was the starting quarterback for the Black squad in the Spring Game...in the first scrimmage, he completed his only pass in 4 attempts, a beautifully thrown 43-yard TD pass to Robert Prescott...in the second scrimmage, he completed 6 of 12 passes for 60 yards with an interception...in the third scrimmage, Shayne operated as the No. 2 quarterback and completed 7 of 11 passes, including 6 of his first 7, for 70 yards and a touchdown and an interception...in the Spring Game, Shayne quarterbacked the Black squad that lost 26-10 and completed 6 of 16 passes for 52 yards...he was intercepted twice on deflected balls...he also ran the ball 9 times for 15 yards.
(1999-Freshman)-Shayne spent the 1999 season as a redshirt and a scout team quarterback...he was very impressive when he hit campus in early August with the newcomers but developed tendinitis in his right shoulder from over throwing in fall camp...as a result of the tendinitis, which bothered him the entire season, he didn’t have an opportunity to battle for playing time during the 1999 season as a backup quarterback.
EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, Placerville, CA--(1996-99)-Shayne was a two-sport star for El Dorado High School, playing football and basketball...listed as the eighth best quarterback in the Western region by PrepStar Magazine...according to PrepStar, “The Beavers may have the QB diamond in the rough for the year! Shayne has everything you could want in a QB. Great size, speed, smarts and a good arm. Many teams were trying to get involved with Shayne late but the Beavers were there first.”...in addition to being El Dorado’s starting quarterback, he was also the starting point guard on the basketball team and averaged over 16 points a game ...Shayne, according to the Placerville Mountain Democat newspaper, had received as many as 400 letters overall from about 70 colleges by mid-December...the schools he had the most interest in that recruited him, other than Oregon State, were Oregon, Boise State, Air Force, Villanova, Northern Arizona, Stanford, California, Arizona State, Washington and UCLA...completed 143 of 227 passes (.630 percentage) for 1,650 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior...he carried the ball 57 times for 322 yards (5.6 average) and four touchdowns...he led El Dorado to a 6-4 record in 1998, the first winning season for the Hawks since 1986...he was a first-team all-conference (Sierra Valley Conference) pick as a junior and senior and was a three-year starter...he ran 4.6 in the 40 in high school...he also played free safety, kicked off and punted...had six pass interceptions and averaged 39.6 punting...according to football coach Dave Johnson, “Shayne had never kicked the ball off a tee before and without any real practice was kicking the ball inside the five-yard line 90 percent of the time, plus he kicked a 50-yard field goal in practice.”...he played baseball as a pitcher and outfielder until his junior year...as a junior, he decided to give track and field a try and ran 15.9 in the high hurdles... “Our basketball coach says he could play Division I basketball,” says Johnson...selected on PrepStar Magazine preseason all-region team as a senior...selected to play in the Optimist All-Star game in the summer after his senior year...“Oregon State is getting the sleeper of quarterbacks in California,” said Johnson. “Every college coach I have talked to has said he is the best one in the state. He is the real thing. Every coach I have talked to in our league agreed that he was the best athlete in the league. He is really looking forward to playing for Coach Erickson,” said Johnson...the final recruiting decision came down to Oregon State over Oregon, Arizona State and Air Force.
