PERSONAL--Born 4/13/79 in Vancouver, WA...son of Bill Byrd III and Jann McClarty-Bryd...his father owns a die casting business and his mother is a middle school teacher...he has two brothers, William Byrd IV, 24, and McCageor, 18...his father lettered on the Washington crew team (1970-73) and his mother was on the Washington rally squad...entered OSU with a 3.5 GPA out of Columbia River High School and was on the school honor roll...Turner is in the College of Health and Human Performance and is an exercise and sports science major...three former prep teammates are playing college football--Ryan Miletich, Washington; Rich LeBlanc, WSU; and Deke Moen, Oregon...selected OSU because, “Coach Riley (former OSU head coach), who believes in the passing game.”
OSU--(2000-Junior)--Turner, a walk-on, reported for spring drills listed No. 3 on the depth chart at split end...he will also report to fall camp as the No. 3 split end...Turner also spent considerable time during the spring working with special teams...he has a chance to be OSU’s holder for PAT at field goals in 2000...he finished spring drills listed as the No. 2 holder behind Seth Trimmer...as a receiver, Turner caught 2 passes for 15 yards in the second scrimmage and was blanked in the other three scrimmages...Turner produced weightlifting bests of 315 pounds in the back squat, 260 in the bench press and 209 in the power clean during winter conditioning.
(1999-Sophomore)--Turner earned a letter in 1999 by playing in one game, UCLA, and catching 1 pass for 7 yards...Turner had a very productive spring practice and moved up the depth chart as a result...he reported to fall camp as the No. 2 split end, based on his play in the spring...in the three major spring scrimmages, Turner caught 2 passes for 27 yards at Roseburg; 2 for 14 yards at Prothro Field and in the Spring game at Hillsboro, caught 1 pass for 12 yards for the Black squad...in the weight room, Turner has produced personal bests of 225 pounds in the hang clean; 280 in the bench press; 330 in the back squat and 230 in the incline...his vertical jump best is 31.50 inches and his body fat test was 6.26 percent.
(1998--Freshman Redshirt)-Turner entered OSU in 1997 as a walk-on but did not join the football program until winter quarter and took part in the winter conditioning program...he went through spring drills and caught 4 passes for 53 yards in OSU’s first major scrimmage...Turner spent the 1998 season as a redshirt.
COLUMBIA RIVER HIGH SCHOOL, Vancouver, WA (1997)--Turner lettered in three sports at Columbia River, football, track and baseball, after playing at Hudson Bay High School as a sophomore and junior...he was a first-team all-league (Greater St. Helens) pick as a senior...also selected to the Vancouver Columbian’s Dream Team...caught 37 passes for 570 yards, 7 touchdowns and a long gain of 46 yards as a senior...his best individual game was against Tumwater High School when he caught 8 passes for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns...as a junior at Hudson Bay, he caught 5 passes for 90 yards and 1 touchdown.
