PERSONAL—(Pronounced CAIN-an) Born 4/2/82 in Glendora, CA...son of Ralph and Donna Sanchez...his father is a police officer and his mother is a floral designer...he has a younger sister, Nichole, 18, and a younger brother, Chaz, 13...he is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major…enjoys golf and weightlifting...Terrell Davis is his favorite athlete...helping to lead his team to prep football playoffs was his top athletic thrill as a prep...selected OSU because, “Great coaching staff. OSU—(2002—Sophomore)—Kanan reported for spring drills as the incumbent starter at right guard...he held on to his starting role during the spring...he has a motor that is running continually and loves to compete…with a year of experience under his belt, Kanan should be a solid offensive guard for the Beavers in 2002...he has tremendous strength and explosion off the ball...during winter conditioning, Kanan posted weightlifting bests of 550 in the back squat, 420 in the bench press, 298 in the power clean and 305 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 22 inches.
(2001—Freshman Redshirt)—Kanan played in his first varsity game at the same time he got his first collegiate start, that against Washington State on October 6, 2001...once Kanan got on the field he was a fixture as the starting right guard for OSU...he finished the season with eight straight starts...Kanan engaged in a hotly contested battle with Mike Kuydendall and Tyler McClaughry for the starting left guard position during the spring…Kanan opened spring drills listed No. 3 on the depth chart at left guard…he returned to fall camp listed No. 2 behind Kuydendall, but the issue was still in doubt until the week of the season opener at Fresno State...Kanan actually replaced McClaughry in the starting lineup...Kuykendall moved to left guard and Kanan became the starter at right guard... he was OSU’s strongest offensive lineman in 2001…he posted weightlifting bests of 420 in the bench press, 286.6 in the power clean and 550 in the squat.
(2000—Freshman)—Kanan spent the 2000 season as a redshirt offensive lineman and participated on the scout squad and was impressive in that role.
WEST COVINA HIGH SCHOOL, West Covina, CA—(1997-00)—Kanan was listed as a preseason all-region selection by PrepStar Magazine...selected all-Western region by PrepStar in its January 2000 issue...earned all-valley (San Gabriel Valley), all-league (Sierra), all-area and all-state honors as a senior and second-team honors on all-league and all-valley squads as a junior...served as a team captain as a junior and senior...played for Coach Mike Maggiore, a former Oregon State lineman and letterman (1988-89)...selected all-area as a senior for the West Covina Bulldogs and named the Lineman of the Year for the Sierra League...ran 5.18 in 40 in high school...selected OSU over Washington, Arizona, Arizona State and Hawaii...also recruited by USC, UCLA, Texas and Washington State...rated No. 113 among athletes in the states of California, Nevada and Hawaii by SuperPrep in its January 2000 All-America issue...he was a three-year starter in football...he played offensive tackle as a sophomore and junior and guard as a senior...also played defensive tackle and was a long snapper for punts and field goals...also a three-year letterman in track as a shot put and discus competitor...played baseball as a freshman and was asked to join the tennis team, but elected to participate in track and field...he broke all of West Covina’s weightlifting records...he posted weightlifting bests of 425 in the bench press, 505 in the squat and 265 in the power clean... “He has tremendous hand and eye coordination and great feet,” said Coach Maggiore. “He has great character and is a player the rest of our team looks up to for leadership. I really think he has the potential to become an All-Pac-10 player.
