Amer Ari Invitational Live Scoring
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - Senior Alex Moore and junior Nick Sherwood each shot a 1-under 71 at the 22nd Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Wednesday and the Oregon State men's golf team is tied for 14th place after the opening round of the Beavers' first tournament of the spring season.
Oregon State shot a 3-over 291 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings Course in the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament that is ranked as the second toughest college event of the spring season by Golf Digest with eight of the 20 teams ranked among the top-25 in the nation.
"We simply were not mentally sharp today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We made too many decisions that ultimately cost us eight shots today. On the fourth and 10th holes our counting scores were 8-over. Those two holes are two of the easiest on the course and that cannot happen.
"To begin the round, we played No. 2 and No 4 into the wind and then the wind totally switched about halfway through the round and we ended up playing two par-5's on the back into the wind as well," he added. "I don't believe the weather leading up to the event had anything to do with it. We've had three days to prepare here so it's more about each of us being better disciplined on the course to make the right choices and execute."
Moore and Sherwood are both tied for 40th individually after their sub-par first round, while junior Nick Chianello shot a 2-over 74 and sophomore David Fink finished with a 3-over 75 to make up Oregon State's scoring on Wednesday. Freshman Scott Kim finished with an 8-over 80 and junior Matt Rawitzer is competing as an individual and shot a 6-over 78.
"We have two rounds to go through and on this course there are plenty of birdies to be made," Reehoorn said. "We need to keep competing and good things will happen for us."
The second round shotgun start begins at 7:30 a.m. Hawaii time on Thursday with the Beavers teeing off on holes one through three.
