Fink Finishes In a Tie For Second Place At Gifford Collegiate

Nov. 7, 2012
SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Junior David Fink posted a career-best finish with a tie for second place after carding an even-par 71 on Wednesday at the three-day, 54-hole Gifford Collegiate that was played in San Martin, Calif.
Fink had three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys in Wednesday's final round at the par-71, 7,360-yard CordeValle Country Club to finish two strokes behind medalist Rick Lamb of Tennessee (6-under 207) and tied with Cameron Wilson of Stanford with a 4-under 209.
"Dave was great all week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "He worked hard to get his game ready and really wanted to play well to end the season, and he did what he set out to do."
As a team, the Beavers finished 10th with a 44-over 371-368-370--1109 in the six-count-format. It completes the fall season for Oregon State with one team title (Mark Simpson Invitational), a second place showing (Topy Cup, a tie for fifth (Pac-12 Preview) and tie for sixth (Alister MacKenzie Invitational).

"This is not the way we wanted to end our fall season, but in the end, maybe this will be a good thing," Reehoorn said. "Our play is not for a lack of effort; the guys worked hard leading up to the event. We just did not executive very well off the tee and at CordeValle you will get punished for poor play off the tee. We can still take some good things from the fall, but we've got to work hard during the offseason to make sure we are ready for a successful spring season.
"Right now we are a bunch of individuals. We need to become a team and take great pride in wearing the orange and black."
It's the third career top-10 finish for Fink, who is a native of Kailua, Hawai'i, with two of them coming this fall. His previous career-best finish was a tie for 10th place at both the Bandon Dunes Championship during his redshirt freshman season and the Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colo., this fall.
He shot a 3-under 68 on Monday and 1-under 70 on Tuesday to record his lowest 54-hole tournament score with a 209, bettering the 211 he shot at last year's Prestige at PGA West and the Topy Cup in Japan this past summer. The 4 under equals his best sub-par three-round score that he posted at the Prestige at PGA West and Mark Simpson Invitational.
"I came up a bit short, but I was really just trying to do as best I could to help the team," Fink said. "If that resulted in an individual title then that's a bonus."
Senior Nick Sherwood shot the Beavers' best round of the day, firing a 1-under 70 that included four birdies, to move 19 spots up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 31st with a 7-over 74-76-70--220.
Senior Matt Rawitzer was the next Oregon State player on the leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 55th with a 13-over 75-74-77--226, while senior Nick Chianello and freshman Tyler Carlson both carded a 76 on Wednesday to tie for 59th with a 15-over 228.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jung finished with a 21-over 77-78-79--234 for a tie for 68th and freshman Chris Tedesco shot a 17-over 75-81-74--230 as an individual in his first college tournament to finish in a tie for 61st.
The Beavers return to action in February when they make their annual trip to Hawai'i to compete at the Amer Ari Invitational.
