David Fink Cards Bogey-Free Round To Open Gifford Collegiate

SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Junior David Fink fired a bogey-free 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Gifford Collegiate on Monday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Fink started on the 10th hole at the par-71, 7,360-yard CordeValle Country Club and made the turn with nine straight pars before reeling off birdies on the par-5 third, par-5 sixth and par-4 ninth holes to sit in a tie for second place with two other golfers. Cameron Wilson of Stanford shot a mind-boggling 10-under 61 to hold the clubhouse lead with two rounds to play.
"Dave has worked hard the last two weeks to make sure his game and, most importantly, his mind are in the right frame to be ready for today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "He did a great job of executing his game plan."
The rest of the Beavers struggled early on the challenging layout, but made a late charge over the final nine holes, to put them in ninth place with a 16-over 371 in their first six-count-five tournament of the 2012-13 season.

"We showed glimpses of being the team I know we can be, but we just continue to beat ourselves," Reehoorn said. "This course is very demanding and you cannot afford to miss shots in certain places. It seemed like on the first nine holes we were in every wrong spot one could possibly be. The good news is that we have 36 holes to go, and with a six-count-five format there is the opportunity to make up strokes if we play solidly."
Fink already has six sub-par rounds in his junior campaign, after coming away with eight as a freshman and six during an injury-plagued sophomore season. He has at least one under-par round in all five tournaments this fall, including a career-best 5-under 67 at the Pac-12 Preview.
Senior Nick Sherwood shot a 3-over 38 going out but had one par and one bogey coming in to finish with a 3-over 74 for a tie for 36th place. Fellow senior Matt Rawitzer was 7 over through six holes but made the biggest comeback of the day with five birdies over the final 12 holes to finish with a 4-over 75 for a tie for 42nd.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jung and true freshman Tyler Carlson each shot a 6-over 77, while senior Nick Chianello finished with an 8-over 79. Chris Tedesco is competing as an individual in his collegiate debut and shot a 4-over 75 that included four birdies.
The Beavers will start Tuesday's second round at 9:30 a.m. and be paired with Coastal Carolina and USC. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
