NORTH PLAINS, Ore. - The senior tandem of Nick Chianello and Nick Sherwood each shot three subpar rounds to record top-10 finishes and the Oregon State men's golf team made a late rally to move up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place at the inaugural Pac-12 Preview on Tuesday.
The Beavers were in ninth place when the 12 conference teams entered the final nine holes of the two-day, 54-hole tournament but made a charge to pass three teams and finish in a tie with Arizona State with a 2-under 293-282-287--862 at the par-72, 7,017-yard Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
California, the top-ranked team in the nation by Golfweek and Golfstat, won the tourney with a 29-under 835, while Washington (22-under 842), USC (21-under 843) and UCLA (9-under 855) rounded out the top four.
"The team showed some good resiliency today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We were not sharp to begin this morning, but they played some great golf in the last eight holes. The front nine is much tougher than the back so for us to play so well I think shows we are growing up a bit."

Chianello had 16 birdies in the three rounds, tied for second most among all 60 players in the field, to finish in a tie for sixth place with a 6-under 71-69-70--210. It's his best career finish as a Beaver and his second consecutive top-10 finish after posting a previous career-best tie for 10th at the Mark Simpson Invitational two weeks ago.
He had two double-bogeys in the opening round but didn't get anything worse than a bogey the rest of the way and had an important eagle for him and the team on his 53rd hole of the tournament, the par-5, 623-yard seventh hole, to move Oregon State into the top five.
Sherwood had 15 birdies of his own in the tournament and finished in a tie for eighth place with a 5-under 71-70-70--211 for the second-best finish of his four-year college career (he finished in a tie for sixth as a sophomore at the Bandon Dunes Championship).
The Albany native tied for second in the field in par-4 scoring at 3.83 to post his third career top-10 finish and was never over par at any point in the tournament with strong starts in all three rounds.
"I'm excited for both of them," Reehoorn said about the Nick's. "Top-10 finishes in this field is very good and I hope a bit of a confidence boost in their own abilities and where they belong in our conference."
Junior David Fink tied his career-best round with a 5-under 67 when he got a birdie on the par-3 12th hole early Tuesday morning after play was suspended due to darkness Monday night that forced 26 golfers to finish their second round.
He finished in a tie for 39th place overall with a 7-over 80-67-76--223 but could have finished much higher if it wasn't for two holes that hurt him considerably, an eight on the par-3 12th in the first round and a nine on the par-5 18th in the final round.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jung bounced back after a couple of tough rounds on Monday with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 41st with an 8-over 76-77-71--224 after finishing second in his collegiate debut at the Mark Simpson Invitational.
Tyler Carlson, a true freshman from Clarkston, Wash., took his turn playing in his first college tournament this week and had two of his three rounds count for the team score as he finished with a 14-over 75-76-79--230 for a tie for 54th place.
The Pac-12 Preview was an inaugural tournament organized and staged by Oregon State, Washington and Oregon that was raved about by the coaches and players for the competition and quality of service by the Pumpkin Ridge staff and volunteers. Kristine Berndt from the conference office attended the event and was told by several people that they hope to make it an annual event.
"I thought it was a great event," Reehoorn said. "Any time you can hold a college tournament on the caliber of golf course that is Pumpkin Ridge, everyone is pretty happy. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long-tenured event."
The Beavers return to action right away when they compete at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., on Monday and Tuesday in their fourth of five fall tournaments.
