FAIRFAX, Calif. - For the second straight tournament, the Oregon State men's golf team made a late charge over the final nine holes, this time rallying at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Tuesday to finish the two-day, 54-hole event in a tie for sixth place.
With the wind blowing hard all day and the conditions much tougher than Monday when 36 holes were played, the Beavers shot 1 over coming in after a 4 over on the front nine to finish with a 1-under 285-277-289--851 at the par-71, 6,759-yard Meadow Golf Club.
The Beavers were in a tie for 10th place after the first round and in eighth through 36 holes before moving up two more spots to finish in a tie for sixth place with Wichita State.
Oregon State rallied much the same way a week ago when it jumped from ninth place to finish in a tie for fifth with a strong final nine holes at the Pac-12 Preview in North Plains, Ore.

"The wind blew at the beginning of the day and it made the course play much tougher, which is what caused the scores to go up today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We were able to move up a couple of spots, but I think we are in a place where I would like to judge our play less on our finish and more on our own standards.
"We've got one more event left this fall at CordeValle in a very strong field on a great course. I need to make sure we get the guys all working on the right things and prepared for the first tee at CordeValle in a couple of weeks."
Redshirt freshman Brian Jung shot the Beavers' best round of the day with a 1-under 70 that included an eagle and three birdies, and finished his third collegiate tournament in a tie for 26th with a 1-over 71-73-70--214.
Senior Nick Sherwood and freshman Tyler Carlson shot identical 2-over 73's on Monday to finish the tournament in a tie for 19th place with a 1-under 212. It's Sherwood's eighth career top-20 finish, and third in four tournaments this fall, and the best finish for Carlson after finishing in a tie for 54th in his collegiate debut at the Pac-12 Preview.
Senior Nick Chianello was unable to post a sub-par round over the two days but still finished in a tie for 41st with a 3-over 71-72-73--216 and junior David Fink wrapped up the tournament with a 9-over 74-70-78--222 for a tie for 61st place.
California ran away with the team title for the second consecutive tournament, finishing with a ridiculous 46-under 806, to finish ahead of San Francisco (26-under 826), Colorado State (13-under 839), BYU (8-under 844) and San Diego State (2-under 850).
The Beavers will compete in their final tournament of the fall season when they travel to San Martin, Calif., for the Gifford Collegiate from Monday, Nov. 5 to Wednesday, Nov. 7.
