Alister MacKenzie Invitational - Live Scoring
FAIRFAX, Calif. - Senior Nick Sherwood and freshman Tyler Carlson both finished 36 holes of play at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday with a 3-under 139 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to eighth place with 18 holes remaining.
The Beavers were eight shots better in the afternoon round to move from a tie for 10th place into sole eighth with a 6-under 285-277--562 at the par-71, 6,718-yard Meadow Golf Club. Only three strokes separates Oregon State from third place with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.
California, the top-ranked team in the nation and winner of last week's Pac-12 Preview, leads the tournament with a 35-under 533, nine strokes better than San Francisco (26-under 542). Four teams - BYU, Wichita State, San Diego State and Colorado State - are tied for third with a 9-under 559.
"This morning we were not very good," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We knew coming in the scores were going to be super low, and when we didn't take advantage of the par-5's to begin the round, it looked like we began to press.
"This afternoon we were better, but we've got to be ready tomorrow from the start on the first hole to post a low score. We need less thinking and more being athletes and just reacting."

Sherwood had six birdies and two bogeys for a 4-under 67 in the afternoon, which is his seventh sub-par round of the season and 22nd in his four-year Oregon State career. He posted the same score at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational as a sophomore and was just two strokes off his career best of 6-under 66 that he carded at The Prestige at PGA West last year.
Carlson shot his first career round in red figures with a 3-under 68 in the afternoon that included six birdies and three bogeys after carding an even-par 71 in the morning. He played in his first college tournament last week at the Pac-12 Preview in North Plains, Ore., with his best score there a 3-over 75.
Both players are tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard.
"It was great to see Tyler play very solidly this afternoon," Reehoorn said. "As he gets more competitive rounds under his belt, he looks more comfortable."
Senior Nick Chianello is tied for 38th after rounds of 71 and 72 for a 1-over 143, and junior David Fink and redshirt freshman Brian Jung are both tied for 46th with a 2-over 74-70--144 and 2-over 71-73--144, respectively.
Brandon Hagy of California was red hot on Monday with a 16-under 64-62--126 to lead by five strokes over Taylor Travis of San Francisco.
The 16-team field will play the final 18 holes of the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
