Sam Gaviglio Selected In Fifth Round By St. Louis

June 7, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State right-handed starter Sam Gaviglio has been the second Beaver chosen in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft, going in the fifth round (170th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
It is the second such selection for Gaviglio, who was taken in the 40th round in the 2008 draft by Tampa Bay.
Gaviglio has been stellar this season, posting a 12-2 record and 1.87 earned run average heading into this weekend's super regional at Vanderbilt. His 12 wins are tied for fourth-best in a season at Oregon State. He also has 25 career wins, which places him in a tie for eighth.
Gaviglio is the first Beaver to be taken by the Cardinals since Mike Stutes went in the ninth round in 2007 but did not sign. Gaviglio is the ninth all-time.
