Eighteen Rowers Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Eighteen Oregon State women’s rowers received recognition for their work in the classroom when the Pac-10 Conference’s All-Academic teams were announced Tuesday by Commissioner Larry Scott.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor and have attended their institution for a year or more.
OSU’s 18 academic honorees matched Stanford for the most in the conference.
Seniors Julia Dissen (3.51 GPA, Biology), Katy Tai (3.64 GPA, Biochemistry and Biophysics; juniors Bonnie Chilibeck (3.06 GPA, Nutrition), Lauren Morgenthaler (3.97 GPA, Sociology), Melissa Sloan (3.64 GPA, Environmental Science) and Leslie Urban (3.94 GPA, Geography); and sophomores Beth Lewis (3.68 GPA, General Science), Alexa Ortiz (3.93 GPA, Zoology) and Hilary Polis (3.91 GPA, Environmental Economics, Policy and Management) secured first team all-academic honors. Morgenthaler, Polis and Urban’s selections to the squad mark the second consecutive selection to the first team, while Dissen (second team in 2010 and first team in 2009), Sloan (second team in 2010) and Chilibeck (honorable mention in 2010) have also earned academic recognition in the past.
In addition to the nine first-team selections – the most in the Pac-10 Conference, Leslie Greer (So., 3.36 GPA, Exercise and Sport Science), Devery Karz (Sr., 3.35 GPA, Speech Communication), Karly Laney (So., 3.54 GPA, Exercise and Sport Science), Kayla Laney (So., 3.35 GPA, Exercise and Sport Science), Meghan Leineweber (Sr., 3.44 GPA, Nutrition), Catherine Smith (Sr., 3.26 GPA, Biology) and Katie Stephenson (Sr., 3.41 GPA, Political Science) were named second-team all-academic. It is the third award for Karz (honorable mention in 2010 and second team in 2009) and Leineweber (second team in 2009 and 2010), while Stephenson was second team in 2010 and Smith was honorable mention last year.
Honorable mention selections were juniors Andrea Harvey and Becca Post both of whom also earned mention in 2010.
