Beavers Advance To A Super Regional
Oregon State swept through the Corvallis Regional, defeating UALR, Creighton and Georgia to advance to its first NCAA Super Regional since the 2007 season. It is the team’s fourth NCAA Super Regional in the past seven seasons.
Postseason History
Oregon State is in the midst its 12th trip to the NCAA postseason dating back to 1952. The Beavers are 38-22 (.633) in NCAA Tournament games, including a mark of 6-1 (.857) in super regional games. Head coach Pat Casey has a 33-10 (.767) record in NCAA games. He has guided the team in each of its seven NCAA Super Regional games.
Beavers Are There In The Postseason
Thanks to research by North Carolina, it is known that the Beavers now have the second-most postseason wins amongst all Division-I teams since the 2006 season. OSU has won 28 such games, trailing only the Tar Heels, who have 35 over that stretch. The Beavers’ sweep of the Corvallis Regional catapaulted OSU past Cal State Fullerton after the Titans won just one game at their regional and have 27 victories since 2006.
Against The SEC
The Beavers will be facing a Southeastern Conference school for the 19th, 20th and potentially 21st times in their history. Oregon State has an 11-7 record against the SEC, and is 7-1 against Georgia after eliminating the Bulldogs on Sunday. OSU and Vanderbilt have met once, in 2008, in Tempe, Ariz., with the Commodores winning 8-1. Vanderbilt’s starter was current Atlanta pitcher Mike Minor while the Beavers started current Philadelphia reliever Mike Stutes.
All-Tournament Team
Sam Gaviglio was the Most Outstanding Player of the Corvallis Regional and he and six other Beavers were named to the All-Tournament team. That ties the 2005 Beavers for the most at one regional. Gaviglio joins Mitch Canham (2005), Chris Kunda (2006) and Joe Paterson (2007) as Beavers named Most Outstanding Player at an NCAA Regional.
Another Couple Of Notes On Gaviglio
Sam Gaviglio was named a second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger and for good reason as the righty has gone 12-2 with a 1.87 ERA entering the Super Regional. His 12 wins are tied for fourth in OSU single-season history, while his ERA, if the season were to end today, would be 10th. He also has 113 strikeouts, good for eighth. He has 25 wins for his career, placing him in a tie for eighth in team history while his winning percentage of .781 (25-7) is third. He is also 10th with 213 strikeouts.
The Killer B’s
Tony Bryant and Matt Boyd have been dominant out of the pen this season, combining for 47 appearances, a 3-2 record and a 1.48 ERA in 90 2/3 innings. Bryant has 12 saves - tying him for third in team single-season history - while Boyd has four. If the season were to end today, Boyd’s 1.45 ERA would be fourth best in single-season history and Bryant’s 1.52 mark would be sixth.
Ryan Dunn And The Stick
Ryan Dunn has been named a Pac-10 Player of the Week (April 11) after OSU swept Arizona State and hit for the cycle on May 10 against Portland. He has started the last 33 games at shortstop - the longest such streak of any Beaver at any position - and has reached base safely in 27 of those games.
Spreading The Wealth
In a sign that shows the team’s balance, the Beavers have eight players who have 10 or more games with double figures in hits. That’s up from five last season, and overall, through 58 games, OSU has 127 multi-hit efforts this season. The Beavers had 110 in 56 games in 2010.
A Little Look At The Pitching
Obviously a key to the team’s success this season has been its pitching. OSU’s ERA heading into the Super Regional is 2.93, down nearly a run and a half from last season’s 4.19. OSU’s bullpen alone has improved dramatically, posting a 2.65 ERA, down from 4.08 a year ago.
Holding On To Leads
The Beavers have been spectaular at holding on to leads this season as they have accumulated a 34-2 record when leading after six, a 35-0 record when leading after seven and the Beavers are 36-0 when taking a lead into the ninth inning. How has this been possible? The aforementioned bullpen has played a big part in that, but the Beavers’ starters have also done a good job at stretching starts. OSU has seen 23 quality starts this season, going 21-2 when that happens.
