Sam Gaviglio Named ABCA Second-Team All-American

June 23, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio earned his fourth All-American honor on Thursday when the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) named him to its second team.
Gaviglio has also been named second-team All-America by Baseball America and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and third team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
He's the first OSU player to earn four All-American honors in a year since Cole Gillespie did so in 2006.
Gaviglio finished the 2011 season with a 12-3 record, tying for the fourth-most wins in a single-season at Oregon State. He struck out 116 - the sixth-highest total in OSU history - while throwing in 120 2/3 innings, which also ties him for eighth.
The right-hander was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team, was selected league pitcher of the week twice and was a Golden Spikes Spotlight Player of the Week. A native of Ashland, Ore., Gaviglio was a semifinalist for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's National Pitcher of the Year award and was also one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate player.
He threw four complete games in 2011, the last of which was a five-hit effort against Creighton that earned him Corvallis Regional Most Outstanding Player honors. In that game, he struck out 11 and induced 16 ground balls. The only hit or out that left the infield through the air was a home run in the fifth inning.
Gaviglio is the 20th Oregon State All-American dating back to 1952 when Dwane Helbig was the first in the program's history. He is also the 10th under head coach Pat Casey, and the first to be recognized by the ABCA since Cole Gillespie was named a first teamer in 2006.
