Matt Boyd Blogs From Team USA: Day 2

June 23, 2011
Matt Boyd is playing with Team USA and is currently in the Northeast with the Collegiate National Team. He checks in after his second full day with the club that didn’t entail much game action due to copious amounts of rain in New Hampshire.
Hey Beaver Nation, Matt Boyd here from Keene, N.H. with Team USA.
Today was again eventful, even though we didn’t even step foot on a field. We woke up and had a great breakfast prepared for us by Keene State College. The hospitality from this school has been great; from the housing to the food they have. They have come through in flying colors.
After breakfast we were supposed to have a small practice around 10 a.m. However, the field was drenched from the night before, and it was cancelled. From about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. all we had planned was lunch, so after that, naturally, I took a small nap. When waking up, I was ready for batting practice. However, we received another notification that BP was cancelled and it was going to be a show and go situation due to the nonstop rains.
This was nothing new to me since I grew up in this weather my whole life. Since the rain was coming down none of us wanted to leave so I just hung out in my dorm room with Marcus Stroman of Duke, Kevin Gausmen of LSU and Michael Lorenzmen from Cal State Fullerton. We got to know each other a lot better and exchanged stories about how all of our experiences playing the same game differed in different parts of the country.
When 5 p.m. rolled around, we went over to the gym here at the school and learned that our game had been postponed. I proceeded to throw a bullpen with coach (Rob) Walton of Oral Roberts (editor’s note: Walton coached Jonah Nickerson and Kevin Gunderson with Team USA as well and liked working with each of them). One of the advantages of being a college baseball player is that he can be under multiple coaches within the same year due to playing for a few different teams. A player can almost pick and choose what he likes from different teachings in order to build his own craft. It was nice to gain different insight from Coach Walton. He also taught me how to throw John Smoltz’s cutter. (That’d be a nice tool to have if I can make it work).
All of us ended up the night watching the Cal-Virginia game in the lobby.
Now I’m off to pack as I have to prepare for my first double header in two different states tomorrow, (New Hampshire and Connecticut, Groton to be specific).
Go Beavs!
Matt
