Fink Goes Back-To-Back At Hawaii's Manoa Cup

June 23, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - David Fink did it again. The sophomore-to-be Oregon State men's golfer defeated Jon Oda 2 and 1 in the championship round at Oahu Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii to defend his title in the 103rd Manoa Cup.
Fink, who is from Kailua, Hawaii, won four of his six matches 1-up and fought back from 3 down after the first five holes to win the 36-hole final match for the second consecutive year. He's the first person to win back-to-back Manoa Cups since Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Brandan Kop did it in 1997 and 1998.
"It was an honor to win such a prestigious tournament for a second year in a row," Fink said. "My whole past year of golf has been learning how to dig deep and grind it out. That's what this tournament was all about as I wasn't playing exceptional; just good enough to keep putting pressure on and coming back when it mattered."
Fink, who entered the tournament as the number one seed, defeated Mark Uekawa 1-up in the opening match, Dalen Yamauchi 4 and 3 in the round of 32, Todd Rego 1-up in the round of 16, Donny Hopoi 1-up in the quarterfinal, Nick Ushijma 1-up in the semifinal before winning the final match over 15-year-old Oda 2 and 1.
The Manoa Cup began in 1907 and is the fourth-longest running tournament in the nation, trailing only the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur and Western Open. It includes 64 players in a match-play format and is one of the most significant amateur tournaments in the United States.
Fink is coming off a spectacular freshman season as he played in all 11 tournaments and finished with a scoring average of 72.88, the 21st best in school history. He was also selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention team.
