Sam Gaviglio Adds Two All-American Honors; Baseball America And NCBWA

June 15, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State junior right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio was named to two additional All-American teams on Wednesday. Baseball America named Gaviglio to its second team while the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named him to its third team.
The two come a week after he was named a second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger.
Gaviglio finished the 2011 season with a 12-3 record, tying for the fourth-most wins in a single-season at Oregon State. He struck out 116 - the sixth-highest total in OSU history - while throwing in 120 2/3 inning, which also ties him for eighth.
The right-hander was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team, was selected league pitcher of the week twice and was a Golden Spikes Spotlight Player of the Week. A native of Ashland, Ore., Gaviglio is a semifinalist for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's National Pitcher of the Year award and was one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate player.
He threw four complete games in 2011, the last of which was a five-hit effort against Creighton that earned him Corvallis Regional Most Outstanding Player honors. In that game, he struck out 11 and induced 16 ground balls. The only hit or out that left the infield through the air was a home run in the fifth inning.
Gaviglio is just one of three Pac-10 players honored by Baseball America, joining UCLA's Trevor Bauer (first team) and Arizona State's Joey DeMichele (third team). Gaviglio and Bauer are the only Pac-10 players on the NCBWA All-American teams.
Gaviglio is the 20th Oregon State All-American dating back to 1952 when Dwane Helbig was the first in the program's history. He is also the 10th under head coach Pat Casey, and the first to be recognized by Baseball America since Cole Gillespie was named a first teamer in 2006.
