CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team will have a five-match road trip, including games against two Atlantic Coast Conference powers, before it begins its Pac-12 schedule, head coach Steve Simmons announced on Monday with the release of the 2011 schedule.
The Beavers will host Portland on Saturday, Aug. 27 to begin its regular season before hitting the road for games against North Carolina (Sept. 2), Wake Forest (Sept. 4), UC Davis (Sept. 9), Sacramento State (Sept. 11) and Gonzaga (Sept. 17).
"To be certain, the 2011 campaign will offer challenges and excitement," Simmons said. "I've assembled our non-conference schedule for the players to compete against some of the top teams nationally and to experience different regions in our country. I think this is important in delivering a quality student-athlete experience. However, in the end it will prepare us for the rigors of our Pac-12 schedule."
The Pac-12 schedule begins on Friday, Sept. 30 when the Beavers host Washington to open a three-game conference homestand that also includes San Diego State on Friday, Oct. 7 and UCLA on Sunday, Oct. 9. All home games will be played at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Pac-12 consists of six teams in men's soccer and was the second-rated conference in the nation with two teams -- California and UCLA -- advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship last season.
Oregon State will once again host the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic, an annual tournament since 2004 that honors student-athletes Stephen Hensor and Joe Zaher who tragically died in 2002. The tournament will be held Sept. 23 and Sept. 25 and feature Gonzaga, Cal State Bakersfield and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).
The Beavers will also host exhibition games against Trinity Western on Wednesday, Aug. 17 and Western Washington on Monday, Aug. 22.
