Sam Gaviglio Named A Semifinalist For National Pitcher Of The Year Honor

June 10, 2011
LUBBOCK, Texas - Oregon State junior right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio added to his long list of honors this season on Friday when he was announced as one of 10 semifinalists for National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Hall Of Fame.
He is one of just two pitchers from the Pacific-10 Conference - the other being UCLA's Trevor Bauer - to make the list and one of seven playing in this weekend's NCAA Super Regionals. Vanderbilt, whom OSU will take on beginning Friday night in Nashville, also has a pitcher on the list, left-hander Grayson Garvin.
Gaviglio, who is 12-2 this season - tying for the fourth-most wins in a single-season at OSU - has already been named an All-Pac-10 First Teamer, a second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger and was honored as the Most Outstanding Player at last weekend's Corvallis Regional.
He's also a two-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honoree, earned Golden Spikes Spotlight recognition on March 21 and was one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award.
He has thrown in 115 1/3 innings this season, striking out 113 while walking just 27. He has an earned run average of 1.87 while throwing four complete games, including two shutouts.
The Beavers and Commodores begin the Nashville Super Regional Friday night at 5 p.m. PT (7 p.m. in Nashville). The game can be seen nationally on ESPNU in HD and ESPN3.com. Mike Parker will call the game live on radio on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
