CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's golf team earned its fifth consecutive berth to the NCAA Men's Golf Regional Championships where it will be the eighth seed at the Arizona Region in Tucson, Ariz., from May 19-21.
"This is a goal that we set out to achieve at the beginning of the year," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It's great to achieve the goal. We've had our ups and downs this year, but if you look at the roster from last year to this year, Alex Moore is really the only one who contributed significantly to the team last year. So I think it's pretty cool for these guys to step in, having not much experience, and have the season we had."
The six regions consist of a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 13 teams and 10 individuals at three of the regions and 14 teams and five individuals at the other three. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., from May 31 to June 5.
"All of the teams that are seeded ahead of us, with the exception of Liberty, we have played head-to-head this year," Reehoorn said. "I think the guys will go in feeling that if we play our best that we can beat anybody in our region."
The Beavers advanced to their first NCAA Championship since 2001 last year when it finished fourth as the No. 4 seed in the Gold Mountain Region in Bremerton, Wash. Oregon State finished in a tie for 16th at the NCAA Championships that were held at The Honors Course in Ooletwah, Tenn.
"No team in Oregon State history has made it two years in a row to the NCAA National Championships so that's the next goal of our team," Reehoorn said.
Reehoorn and assistant coach Tim Sundseth have set a lineup of juniors Alex Moore, Jonnie Motomochi and Casey King, sophomore Nick Sherwood and freshman David Fink to compete for the Beavers at the NCAA Regional Championship as they have 10 days to prepare before it begins.
"I'm not going to change much up," Reehoorn said. "We'll keep doing the same thing and that's to play and work on our short game. I don't want to make it bigger than it is; I don't need to add pressure. They are all ready to go."
The Arizona Region will be played at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort that is nestled in the foothills of the San Catalina Mountains and has been the home to several PGA Tour and NCAA events, including the prestigious Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
"We haven't played it before, but it's a desert course, yet there are trees, so it has a different feel," Reehoorn said. "It's a course where if the wind doesn't blow, you can shoot some low scores. We will have to play our best to advance. They used to have a PGA event there so it's a real good course and a good test, but you have to shoot some scores."
