Sam Gaviglio Named To Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List

May 4, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio is one of 23 new collegiate players named to the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, as announced by USA Baseball.
The watch list includes 60 collegiate players across the country. Twenty-three players were added after 13 were removed from the preseason watch list.
The Golden Spikes Award is given annually at the end of each season to the nation's top collegiate player. The 2011 honor will be announced on Friday, July 15 on the MLB Network.
Gaviglio is a two-time Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week and carries an 8-1 record and 2.00 earned run average into this weekend's series with No. 21 California.
The native of Ashland, Ore., has worked a career-high 81 innings and has 76 strikeouts to just 19 walks while opponents are batting .189 against him. He opened the season by allowing two unearned runs in the opener against Gonzaga, then did not allow a run over his next 41 2/3 innings, placing him just 1 1/3 innings shy of tying the Pac-10 record.
He won five consecutive games to open the season and is currently on a three-game win streak as OSU prepares for the Golden Bears.
He is one of eight players from the Pac-10 on the watch list.
Oregon State focuses next on No. 21 California, which visits Goss Stadium in a three-game series that starts Friday night at 5:35 p.m.
