Sam Gaviglio Named A Semifinalist For 2011 Golden Spikes Award

May 31, 2011
DURHAM, N.C. - Oregon State junior right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio is one of 30 semifinalists for the 2011 Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the nation's top collegiate player. USA Baseball announced the full 30-player list Tuesday morning.
Gaviglio finished the 2011 regular season with an 11-2 record and 1.95 earned run average in 15 games, all starts. He struck out 102, becoming just the 10th pitcher in team history to reach the 100 strikeout plateau.
His 11 wins, meanwhile, not only placed him in second in the Pacific-10 Conference this season, but also put him in the Oregon State single-season record books as it ties him for the sixth-most victories in a single season.
The 11 wins also gives him 24 for his career, which is good for a tie for ninth in school history.
The right-hander opened the season by allowing two unearned runs against Gonzaga, then held opponents scoreless for 41 2/3 innings before allowing a run against UC Santa Barbara. Sandwiched in during the streak was a one-hit shutout at Long Beach State where Gaviglio took a perfect game into the eighth inning.
He was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week twice this season (March 1 and March 21) and earned Golden Spikes Spotlight Player of the Week after the shutout over the Dirtbags.
He is one of just three players from the Pac-10 on the list, joining Oregon's Tyler Anderson and UCLA's Trevor Bauer. The list of 30 will be narrowed to three finalists on June 6 with the presentation of the award winner scheduled for July 15 at 3 p.m. PT on the MLB Network's "MLB Tonight" broadcast.
