Beavers In A Regional Again
Oregon State makes a trip to the NCAA postseason for the 12th time in program history. The Beavers are making their sixth postseason appearance in the last seven years, and for the third consecutive year.
Postseason History
Oregon State is making its 12th trip to an NCAA Regional dating back to 1952. The Beavers are 35-22 (.614) in NCAA Tournament games, including a mark of 18-15 (.545) in regional games. Head coach Pat Casey has a 30-10 (.750) record in NCAA games and has gone 13-5 (.722) in NCAA Regional contests.
Beavers Hosting A Regional
The Beavers are hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2006, and for the fourth time in school history. Oregon State has played in 11 regional games at Goss Stadium, and is 9-2 (.818) in those games. OSU has won its last six NCAA Regional games at home, and eight including Super Regionals. The Beavers are 15-3 (.833) all-time in home postseason contests.
Regional Experience
Thirteen Oregon State players have NCAA Regional experience, with six having played in each of the team's last two regionals (Fort Worth in 2009 and Gainesville in 2010). Josh Osich appeared in the Fort Worth Regional in 2009 but did not appear in Gainesville last season due to injury. Nine active position players have combined for a batting average of .290 (27-for-93) with eight doubles, one home run and 15 RBI in the postseason. OSU's active pitchers have a 1-1 record and 10.80 ERA in 18 1/3 innings in the postseason.
Against The Corvallis Regional Field
The Beavers have played against each of the three teams in the Corvallis Regional, most recently against Georgia. OSU and Georgia squared off seven times between 2006 and 2008, with the Beavers posting a 6-1 record. Oregon State last played Arkansas-Little Rock in 2004, winning 8-3, and took both of its games against Creighton in 1996, 8-3 and 14-10.
Some Season Notes
Oregon State won 12 games early in the season, tying for the longest win streak under head coach Pat Casey (equaling a 12-game streak in 2007). The Beavers also held an 11-game win streak during Pac-10 play, which helped the club to 17 league victories, good for the second-most in a season since the Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season.
All-Pac-10 Note
Oregon State head coach Pat Casey was named the league's top coach on Tuesday. He was joined on the honor roll by first teamers Tony Bryant, Sam Gaviglio and Kavin Keyes. Honorable mention honors went to Carter Bell, Ryan Dunn, Josh Osich, Andrew Susac, Tyler Smith and Matt Boyd.
Weekly Honors
Oregon State had five different players earn six league weekly honors this season. Andrew Susac, Ryan Dunn and Kavin Keyes earned Player of the Week honors while Same Gaviglio (twice) and Josh Osich were named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. The six honors were the most in a single season since the Pac-10 unified in 1999.
Sam Gaviglio Note
Oregon State junior Sam Gaviglio won 11 games during the regular season, tying for the sixth-best single-season total in school history. His 102 strikeouts are good for ninth in school history. The right-hander also has 24 career victories, good for a tie for ninth in team history.
Tony Bryant And The Art Of The Save
Oregon State sophomore closer picked up the first save of his career in 2011, and ended the regular season with a Pac-10 leading 10. The 10 saves are fifth in Oregon State single-season history.
Season Individual Achievements
Oregon State had a whole host of significant individual achievements this season. The Beavers saw Josh Osich throw the program's fourth no-hitter on April 30 at UCLA, and just 10 days later, Ryan Dunn hit for the second cycle in school history. Sam Gaviglio opened the season with 41 2/3 scoreless innings of work after allowing two unearned runs in his first inning of the year. He took a perfect game into the eighth inning at Long Beach State during that stretch, eventually allowing just one hit in a 4-0 win over the Dirtbags.
