Oregon State To Host Creighton, Georgia And Arkansas-Little Rock At Corvallis Regional

May 30, 2011
INDIANAPOLIS - The 10-person NCAA selection committee announced the entire 64-team field for the 2011 Division I baseball postseason Monday morning. The Beavers are the No. 1 seed at the Corvallis Regional, and will be joined by No. 2 Creighton, No. 3 Georgia and fourth-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock.
"We are obviously very happy to be included in the field of 64, especially as a host site," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We believe this will be a great regional for the fans here at Goss Stadium; the committee did a great job with their selections this year. This team is excited to get to the postseason and play in front of the home fans."
The regional starts Friday at Goss Stadium and continues through at least Sunday. A Monday "if necessary" game will be played if the regional champion can't be declared on Sunday. Times for each game will be announced soon.
Creighton finished the regular season with a 44-14 record and 15-9 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play and earned their bid to the tournament as an automatic qualifier. The Beavers and Blue Jays last played in 1996, with OSU holding a 2-0 record in the series.
Georgia advanced to the postseason as an at-large team, having finished 31-30 overall and 16-14 in Southeastern Conference play to finish fourth in the Eastern Division. The Beavers and Bulldogs have a recent history, having met seven times, most recently in 2008 at PGE Park. OSU holds a 6-1 advantage in the series.
Arkansas-Little Rock claimed the Sun Belt Conference's postseason tournament to earn the automatic bid to the postseason. UALR holds a 24-32 record this season and finished eighth in the regular season with a 10-20 record. The Beavers have met UALR once, in 2004, winning 8-3.
Oregon State will square off with Arkansas-Little Rock Friday while Creighton and Georgia will also play Friday.
The other 15 host sites include: Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia Tech), Austin, Texas (Texas), Fullerton, Calif. (Cal State Fullerton), Chapel Hill, N.C. (North Carolina), Clemson, S.C. (Clemson), College Station, Texas (Texas A&M), Columbia, S.C. (South Carolina), Fort Worth, Texas (TCU), Gainesville, Fla. (Florida), Houston, Texas (Rice), Los Angeles, Calif. (UCLA), Nashville, Tenn. (Vanderbilt), Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State) and Tempe, Ariz. (Arizona State).
Oregon State is matched up with the Nashville Regional as Vanderbilt is the No. 6 national seed. The Commodores will see No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Troy and No. 4 Belmont in their regional this weekend.
The Beavers have hosted 18 postseason games at Goss Stadium, going 15-3 with an eight-game winning streak. Of those 18 games, 11 have come during an NCAA Regional, with the Beavers holding a 9-2 record.
Oregon State last hosted an NCAA Regional in 2006, taking all three games from Wright State, Kansas and Hawaii.
The Beavers are making their 12th all-time appearance in the postseason, and the sixth in the last seven seasons. Oregon State head coach Pat Casey has guided the club to each of its last six appearances, and is 30-10, including a 13-5 mark in NCAA Regional play.
His 30 wins have comprised better than 85 percent of the team's all-time postseason victories.
