Former Beaver Darwin Barney Named NL Rookie Of The Month

CHICAGO - Former Oregon State shortstop Darwin Barney has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for April, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.
Barney batted .326 (29-for-89) during the month with a home run and 14 runs driven in, which ranked him second among all Major League rookies. He also doubled four times, tripled twice and scored 15 runs while anchoring the second base starting spot for the Chicago Cubs.
Barney, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Cubs, played for three years at Oregon State, collecting two national titles and three trips to Omaha.
During his tenure with the Beavers, he played in 191 games, batting .311 with 40 doubles, six triples, seven home runs and 136 RBI. He is currently the program's all-time leader with 765 at bats and 238 hits and his 152 runs scored is second only to current Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.
Barney's former collegiate club, the Beavers, host Oregon Tuesday night in a game slated to start at 5;35 p.m. PT at Goss Stadium. Note, there are a limited number of seats available for Tuesday's game.
