CORVALLIS -
Oregon State gymnastics student-athlete Stephanie McGregor has been honored by OSU’s Faculty Senate Student Recognition and Awards Committee with the Waldo-Cummings Award.
The Waldo-Cummings Award is regarded as the most prestigious acknowledgement given to undergraduates at OSU, recognizing academic excellence (minimum 3.5 GPA or better) and superior extracurricular achievements.
Out of pool of several hundred applicants, McGregor was one of 10 academic seniors recognized with the Waldo-Cummings Award; 10 more seniors received honorable mention.
Since arriving at OSU in the fall of 2008, McGregor has been involved in numerous community activities and has accumulated a 3.97 grade-point average while studying Bioengineering in Oregon State’s Honors College.
McGregor is part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is involved in Read with the Beavs at local schools, Relay for Life and OSU Gymnastics’ Pink Out activities among other endeavors.
The junior (athletics) from Calgary, Alberta, also has an impact on the competition floor. McGregor has been a regular in the Beavers’ vault and floor exercise lineups for the past three years. In 2011, she performed in the lead off role for the nation’s No. 1 uneven bars lineup helping OSU to the NCAA Championships and its second straight eighth place finish at nationals.
The roots of the Waldo-Cummings Award date back to 1912, when Clara H. Waldo founded the Waldo Award to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female students at OSU (then Oregon Agricultural College). Waldo was the first woman to serve on the Oregon State System of Higher Education Board of Regents, doing so in 1905. OSU’s Waldo hall carries her name.
In 1948, the widow of local businessman E.A. Cummings arranged an endowment to recognize the achievements of OSU’s male graduates.
Later, the awards were combined and the gender-specificity was dropped.
Six freshmen and six sophomores received the Waldo-Cummings Award, as well as 10 juniors. OSU sophomore Alexa Ortiz from the women’s rowing team received honorable mention for the award.
