TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State men's golf team shot its best round at the NCAA Arizona Regional on Saturday to finish in seventh place, while junior Alex Moore finished second after shooting an even-par 71 in the final round.
San Diego State won the team title with a 19-under 833 and will advance to the NCAA Championships, along with Texas A&M, California, Pepperdine and Arizona by finishing in the top five at the par-71, 7,199-yard Omni Tucson National Golf Resort.
The Beavers shot a 4-under 280 on Saturday and got consistent play from every player with freshman David Fink and sophomore Nick Sherwood each firing a 2-under 69, junior Jonnie Motomochi and Moore shooting an even-par 71, and junior Casey King finishing with a 1-over 72. Oregon State finished the tournament with a 3-under 284-285-280--849, just five strokes out of one of the coveted top five positions.
"It's not the way you want to end the season by not advancing to nationals, but the guys played hard today and fought for every shot," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was our best round of the tournament and the best golf we've played in a while. It was good to see the guys rise to the occasion when they needed to."
Moore, who entered the final round with the clubhouse lead, had three birdies and three bogies on the day to finish the tournament with a 7-under 66-69-71--206. Matt Hansen of UC Davis shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday and won medalist honors with a 9-under 64-72-68--204.
"I fought hard, but I didn't have it," Moore said. "I got off to a sluggish start but grinded as hard as I could for my team."
Moore finishes the year with a 70.74 scoring average, the second lowest in Oregon State history to the 70.31 Diego Velasquez posted last year. Moore had five top ten finishes this season, including a tie for first and two ties for second and also shot the lowest round of golf in school history, a 9-under 63 at the Oregon Duck Invitational.
"It shouldn't be understated at all how great Alex was this year," Reehoorn said. "His play this spring has been remarkable and I'm glad we have him for another year."
Every player on the roster, with the exception of Moore, was making their first appearance at the NCAA Regional and got valuable experience heading into next season. Fink finished tied for 16th with a 1-under 72-71-69--212, Sherwood was tied for 25th with a 1-over 71-74-69--214, King had a 5-over 75-71-72--218 for a tie for 45th and Motomochi had his best round on Saturday and finished in a tie for 61st with a 10-over 77-75-71--223.
The Beavers conclude their 2010-11 season with five top five finishes, including one second place finish (Pacific Invitational) and two third place finishes (Cabo Collegiate and Alister MacKenzie Invitational).
"The best part of our season ending today is the fact I don't have the disappointment of saying goodbye to anybody," Reehoorn said. "I get to have all of them back next year. I'm disappointed we didn't make it to nationals, but we can use it for motivation for next year and they will understand what it takes. Having all five guys back, and adding some new guys, makes me want the season to start tomorrow."
