TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Alex Moore has the clubhouse lead and the Oregon State men's golf team sits in eighth place after Friday's second round at the NCAA Arizona Regional with Saturday's final round to determine who will advance to the NCAA Championships.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships May 31 to June 5 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. The final round of the NCAA Arizona Regional, being held at the par-71, 7,199 yard Omni Tucson National Golf Resort, begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The Beavers shot a 1-over 285 on Friday after an even-par 284 on Thursday and are three strokes out of fifth place where California and Washington are tied at 3-under 565. Texas Tech is also between Oregon State and an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships with a 1-under 567.
"We are still right in it and have to get it done," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "For us to advance to the national championships as a team, we need another great round from Alex and I expect another great round from him. I expect him to shoot in the 60's again because he's playing that well."
Moore, who was in second place after the opening round with a 5-under 66, moved into the lead with a 2-under 69 on Friday to sit at 7-under 135. First round leader Matt Hansen of UC Davis shot an even-par 72 on Friday and is one stroke back at 6-under 136, while Cameron Peck of Texas A&M is in third at 5-under 137.
"I played okay today," Moore said. "My short game kept me in it. I played well, except for the last hole, but I think I have a chance tomorrow. On No. 7, No. 9 and No. 18, if you play those holes well, you're going to have a good round. They are demanding holes. I just tried to make as many birdies as I could. I just focused on those three holes and let the others take care of themselves since those are the three most difficult holes."
Moore has been in this position before after holding the clubhouse lead at the Oregon Duck Invitational and being tied for the lead at the Pac-10 Championships. He shot a 1-over 73 in the final round at the Oregon Duck Invitational to finish tied for second place and fired a 1-under 69 in the final round of the Pac-10 Championships to tie for medalist honors before falling in a heart-breaking seven hole sudden-death playoff.
Oregon State started on the 10th hole on Friday and was 5-under at the turn before giving six strokes back on the final nine holes. After the first two rounds, the Beavers are 16-over on the front nine and 15-under on the back nine with a 1-over 284-285--569.
"It was a pretty disappointing finish," Reehoorn said. "It left a sour taste in the team's mouth. I told them we have to forget about what happened. At the end of the day, it's how you respond to the bad stuff. We start on the 10th hole tomorrow so, more than likely, it will come down to the nine holes where we haven't played well."
Freshman David Fink and Junior Casey King both finished with an even-par 71 on Friday, while sophomore Nick Sherwood accounted for the Beavers other score on Friday with a 3-over 74. Fink is tied for 24th with a 1-over 72-71--143, Sherwood is tied for 35th with a 3-over 71-74--145 and King is tied for 45th with a 4-over 75-71--146.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring will be available at golfstat.com. Tournament recaps, results and post-round notes and quotes also can be found at arizonawildcats.com.
