No. 17 Beavers Set to Race at Pac-10 Championships

May 12, 2011
CORVALLIS -
The 17th-ranked Oregon State men’s rowing team travels to the Sacramento area this Sunday, May 15, to race at the Pac-10 Championships at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
OSU’s Varsity 8, which hasn’t raced in nearly a month since turning in a strong performance at the Stanford Invitational, will be seeded fourth in a strong field featuring No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California and No. 13 Stanford. The Beavers will be chasing one of three automatic qualifying bids to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships to be held at the end of the month at Camden, N.J.
“We’ve had this big break to really prepare for this race,” head coach Steve Todd said. “I think the guys are rowing better technically. They’ve all been very internally motivated and I think they’re pretty excited to race. It will be a good opportunity for them to test themselves and see if that bit of technical improvement has helped their speed overall.”
Three of the Beavers’ four boats are seeded fourth with the exception being OSU’s Freshman 8 which will be the first out of the gate Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. The Varsity 4+ race is scheduled for 10:10, the Junior Varsity 8 is slated for 10:50 and the V8 will put the finishing touches on the men’s racing at 11:30.
“We’re all excited and a couple of our boats have a good chance of medaling this week. As a whole the team has the goal of making it to the IRA Championships and while a top three finish by the Varsity 8 would automatically qualify them, a good result overall is really what we need to achieve that goal.”
Following the races, the awards ceremony will be held at 12:15 p.m. Live streaming of the races will be available at http://www.jamcotimes.com/ under “2011 Regattas: Pac-10 Championships.” Also check back with osubeavers.com for a recap of the weekend’s racing.
