Bob De Carolis Signs Contract Extension

Oregon State University Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis has signed a five-year contract extension effective July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2016, OSU President Dr. Edward Ray announced Tuesday.
De Carolis has served in his current role since Aug. 28, 2002 and should he fulfill the contract would be OSU’s second-longest tenured Director of Athletics (R.S. “Spec” Keene, 1947-64) in school history.
“Bob continues to be an outstanding leader for the OSU athletics department, and a valuable member of the university leadership team,” Ray said. “His vision has enabled alumni, fans and current students and staff to feel proud to be associated with this university for both its competitiveness on the playing field and the integrity of the program. Bob's abilities to manage resources and recruit colleagues who are world class people and coaches are well known. There is no question that even better days are ahead for Oregon State University athletics with Bob as our Director of Athletics.”
The 58-year old native of Philadelphia, Pa., oversees a department with a $54 million budget, over $25 million increase when he was first appointed to the position. He was selected the 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision West Region Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by his peers and has guided Beaver athletics to unquestionably it’s best era.
“I’d like to thank President Ray, Mark McCambridge and the rest of the university leadership team for having the confidence in me to continue to lead this program forward,” De Carolis said. “We have made tremendous strides in recent years, but we have a lot of work to be done. I want to also thank the student-athletes, coaches, staff and most of all `Beaver Nation’ for their support in making Oregon State University athletics successful.”
With him in a leadership role the football program has played in nine bowl games, baseball has competed in the College World Series three times (two national titles), men’s basketball captured the College Basketball Invitational (2009), gymnastics has competed in the national championships six straight years and overall 16 of the 17 intercollegiate programs sponsored by OSU have participated in postseason.
Academically, OSU’s student-athletes continue to thrive with Beaver teams routinely among the top schools for Pac-10 Conference All-Academic selections. Community service has increased dramatically with all teams participating in local, national and international endeavors. Beaver Athletic Student Fund contributions have more than quadrupled to nearly $11 million.
De Carolis has also spearheaded capital improvements for all of OSU’s athletic facilities, including planned structures for academics (Student Success Center breaks ground this month), a track complex and basketball practice building. Since his arrival in 1998, he has been the driving force behind the construction or remodeling of Reser Stadium, Gill Coliseum, Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the OSU Softball Complex, the Sports Performance Center, Valley Football Center, Merritt-Truax Indoor Center and the OSU Boathouse.
He is also actively involved in national and conference level committees just having completed a stint as chair of the conference television committee, former chair of the conference budget and finance committee, and currently serves on the bowl committee. At the NCAA level he currently serves on the Football Bowl Subdivision Issues Committee and is a former member of the Student-Athlete Benefits and Financial Aid Cabinet, and the Management Council (MANCO).
De Carolis began his OSU career in 1998 as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and was promoted 14 months later to Senior Associate Athletic Director. He came to OSU from the University of Michigan where he served in various capacities for nearly 20 years.
De Carolis is a 1976 graduate of Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa., with a B.S. in business education. He received a Master’s of Science degree in sports management in 1979 from the University of Massachusetts. During his undergraduate days at Bloomsburg, he was a two-year letterwinner in football and baseball from 1973-75. In 2008 he was awarded the Harold VanderZwaag distinguished alumnus award from UMass and in 2009 he was inducted into the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame.
He is married to the former Sandra Taylor and they have three children, daughter Lyndsay, a 2011 graduate of the University of Michigan, and twin daughters Lauren and Hayley, seniors at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis.
The new contract pays De Carolis an annual salary of $490,364.
