Volleyball Prevails in Second Annual Digging for Dylan
April 9, 2011
Corvallis, Ore. - Over $1,000 was raised in the second annual Digging for Dylan for the Sparrow Clubs on Saturday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum with the Oregon State volleyball team prevailing once again over the Oregon State football team.
Dylan Cain is a local 5-year-old boy who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. The volleyball team under the direction of head coach Taras Liskevych, has volunteered their time throughout the past few seasons on several fundraising events for Cain. Current student-athletes sophomore Kelsey Zimmerman and redshirt freshman Natalie Morgan served as team coaches, pairing up in the first set of the night to coach the 12-player volleyball squad to another easy victory over the football team, made up of 14 current players, before the teams went coed.
In the second set, for the second straight year, Feti Unga dominated the offensive side, while Castro Masaniai and Johnny Hekker added solid all-around play. The volleyball team switched sides in the final set to 15 with the Dominators coming up with the 17-15 win over the Locs.
Some lenient refereeing by volleyball associate head coach Mark Barnard made it an entertaining atmosphere with graduate assistant Luke Maloney inserting his comments as the public address announcer.
