Meet David Vieru
By Ashley Theeler
A former member of Future Business Leaders of America as Vice President of his region, a champion for the heavyweight division for the Mt. Hood Conference in wrestling, a graduate of Portland's Centennial High School with a 3.6 GPA and a member of the National Honor Society, David Vieru is a well-rounded individual who takes nothing for granted.
Although Vieru is an offensive lineman, he does plenty off the field to make him stand out. Taking 19 credits this term and numerous hours of community service, it is clear that he cares about his surroundings and has high hopes of making an impact here as well.
Vieru understands that he is in a position that many would hope to be in and he appreciates everything that has come his way. He started off by saying, "I'd like to thank God for this opportunity and my parents." This is one of the many examples of how he has shown his gratitude towards the program, the game and his family.
Continue on to the following Q&A:
How has your brief experience at Oregon State been so far?
"It's been great. I am really thankful for this opportunity and I have been working really hard in hopes of making a name for myself. I want to become a true asset to the team."
How do you think football thus far has contributed to your life?
"I believe that with football and other sports you learn valuable life lessons that you couldn't otherwise learn. I've learned the true meaning of teamwork, leadership and hard work through all the hardships on and off the field."
What kind of sacrifices have you had to make in order to be where you are in your athletic career?
"We have to balance athletic and academic life, some of the academic life can suffer with all of the training that is required to get where you need to be. Especially when you're trying to cultivate your craft, best as possible."
Who has been your biggest support or biggest influence in your life?
"This may be a bit cliché, but I'd have to say my parents. They've been there with me every step of the way. Paid for numerous camps and have always being supportive morally; I would like to thank them for that."
Where do you see yourself in five years?
"Definitely gradated with a degree from Oregon State and if God-willing, getting ready for the NFL Draft. But definitely I see myself in the business world, a CEO or entrepreneur of some kind."
How has the Oregon State football program helped you?
"We have great coaching here and they've given me the opportunity to be here, which I am very grateful for. Hopefully the connections I make through football will help me get my name out there and just see what I can do for the program in exchange for all they've done for me."
What would you say your biggest strength is as a player?
"I am very coachable. I like listening for what I need to do and once I hear it, I execute it; no questions asked."
What do you do in your free time?
"I enjoy reading. I try to cultivate as much knowledge as possible. I enjoy reading dark comedy, history or any sort of new knowledge I can add to my mental repertoire. I also love traveling. I have been to many countries and loved seeing the world. I'd really like to go to Fiji, it's once place I have never been and I have heard great things about. I enjoy watching Dexter or Californication, and my favorite movie would have to be Casino or The Godfather."
What do you hope to see for yourself for spring ball?
"I just want to go out there and work my hardest; show my determination and dominate at my position. Get coached up by Coach (Mike) Cavanaugh and continue to improve so I could be better prepared for this fall."
What are your main goals for this season?
"I want to be one of the top two strings or to be in the fighting spot for the position of offensive guard; and to be a strong competitor in the Pac-12 Conference."
