WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
Four Oregon State gymnasts received recognition for their work in the classroom when the Pac-10 Conference's All-Academic teams were announced Tuesday by Commissioner Larry Scott.
Stephanie McGregor received first team honors for the second year in a row while Leslie Mak and Olivia Vivian earned second team. Melanie Jones was honorable mention.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor and have attended their institution for a year or more.
McGregor, a junior studying Bioengineering in OSU's Honors College, has performed in the vault and uneven bars lineups in all 12 of the Beavers' meets this year and has been in the floor exercise lineup five times. In 2011, the Calgary, Alberta native has set a career-high of 9.875 on the bars and has surpassed the 9.8 mark on the event eight times in the leadoff spot in the No. 1 ranked bars lineup in the country. This is the second straight academic award of McGregor's career.
Mak, a junior studying Marketing, earned second team all-academic team honors for the second year in a row. Mak, who has been a great three-event competitor throughout her career at OSU, has had a breakout season for the Beavers and was recently selected as the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. In addition, Mak won the Pac-10 title in the all-around and on beam as well as tying for the conference title on the bars. Last weekend at the Corvallis Regional, Mak again won the all-around, bars and beam titles. The Toronto, Ontario native is currently ranked tied for No. 1 in the nation on the balance beam.
Vivian, a junior studying New Media Communications, garnered the second academic award of her career after earning first team honors as a sophomore. The native of Perth, Australia has been a regular in three lineups for OSU again in 2011. This season Vivian has established career-high marks of 9.975 on the uneven bars, 9.90 on the balance beam and 9.875 on the floor.
Jones, a sophomore from Mordialloc, Australia, received honorable mention for the first time in her career. Jones, an Exercise and Sport Science major, has been a regular in the beam and floor lineups and adds depth to the vault lineup. Earlier this year, she scored a career-best 9.85 on the beam and a 9.925 on the floor.
