Moore Looks To Make History At Pac-10 Championships

April 30, 2011
STANFORD, Calif. - Alex Moore has a chance to make history.
The Oregon State junior is tied for the clubhouse lead going into Sunday's final round at the Pac-10 Championships and could become just the third Beaver golfer, and the first since 1971, to win the individual title in the 52-year history of the event.
After firing the lowest round in Oregon State history, a 9-under 63 at the Oregon Duck Invitational in March, Moore has a chance to put himself in the record books again. He had four birdies and three bogies on Saturday en route to a 1-under 69 and is tied for the clubhouse lead with Martin Trainer of USC with a 5-under 205 at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
"Alex played real well today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "He had a couple of missed opportunities but he did everything he needed to do to put himself in position to win this tournament. He has been in this position a couple of times before and I think his experience in this situation will help him a lot."
The Beavers posted a 15-over 365 in Saturday's third round and sit in sixth place with a 38-over 367-356-365--1088, just five strokes behind California at 33-over 1083.
"As a team, we got great play from David (Fink) and Nick (Sherwood), but we just aren't getting any help from the bottom of our lineup," Reehoorn said. "We aren't making good choices on the golf course and aren't executing the game plan like we need to. I really think it will be tough to catch UCLA, but we can catch Cal and finish fifth and give us some momentum going to regionals."
Freshman David Fink shot a 1-under 69 on Saturday and is tied for 33rd with a 9-over 73-77-69--219, while sophomore Nick Sherwood continued his steady play with a 3-over 73 and is tied for 24th with a 7-over 75-69-73--217.
But the story is Moore, who could join the likes of Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paul Casey and Corey Pavin to win the Pac-10 individual title. "More than anything, I would love to see Alex playing great tomorrow and win the championship," Reehoorn said.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
