Moore Tied For Clubhouse Lead At Pac-10 Championships

April 29, 2011
STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Alex Moore fired a 5-under 65 in the afternoon round on Friday and is tied for first place at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships where the Oregon State men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth after the first day of competition.
Moore had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys to post a tournament-best 65 in the second round at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course and is tied with Martin Trainer of USC with a 4-under 136 after shooting a 1-over 71 in the morning round.
"Alex saved us," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Alex and Nick (Sherwood) played great on the back nine in the afternoon round and we needed it. With nine holes to go, I was about as frustrated as I can get. But Alex was six-under and Nick was four-under on the back nine to keep us in it. I'm super proud of the guys for battling back and hanging in there."
Sophomore Nick Sherwood shot a 5-over 75 in the morning round and was three-over going out in the afternoon round before making four birdies coming in to finish with a 1-under 69 and is tied for 21st overall with a 4-over 75-69--144.
The Beavers were in eighth place after posting a 17-over 367 in the morning round before bouncing back with a 6-over 356 in the afternoon round to move into a tie for sixth place at the three-day, 72-hole tournament.
Junior Casey King had a pair of 3-over 73's and is tied for 31st with a 6-over 146, while junior Jonnie Motomochi had a 7-over 75-72--147, freshman David Fink sits at 10-over 73-77--150 and sophomore Jeff Petroff is at 14-over 77-77-154.
"In this format, where six-counts-five, being 14 strokes back is nothing," Reehoorn said. "We still need better play from our other guys. We need everyone to play much better. If Casey and Jonnie and Dave can play better, anything can happen."
Moore shot the lowest round in Oregon State history earlier this season in the afternoon round at the Oregon Duck Invitational when he fired a 9-under 63 at the par-72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club where he also had the clubhouse lead after the first day.
"He came into this week expecting to be in this position and he has 36 holes to keep it going," Reehoorn said.
The third round begins with tee times off the first and 10th holes at 9 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
"There's a lot of golf left to be played," Reehoorn said. "Overall, we have to play with a little more passion and take more pride in what we are doing out there. We can't let bad things effect us. We get too negative and we can't let that happen."
