Last Game
James Nygren and Ben Wetzler combined to strike out 13 as the third-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Portland, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Joe Etzel Field. Four runs were all Nygren needed as the right-hander worked 5 1/3 innings to improve to 7-1, tying Sam Gaviglio for the team lead in wins. The senior tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and scattered just three hits while walking none. Wetzler came in and worked the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out five.
Here’s To 30 Wins
The Beavers’ 6-1 win over Portland Tuesday marked OSU’s 30th victory of the season. That’s one game shy of the school record for fastest to 30 wins as the 2005 club reached it in 37 games. It’s the 11th time in Pat Casey’s 17 seasons that OSU has hit 30 wins.
Goodbye April
Oregon State may not want to see the month go as the first two games of the series will be the last two in the month. The Beavers are 12-2 in the month of April. It’s the team’s most wins in the month since 2006, when OSU won 15.
On The Road
Oregon State has won each of its last seven games away from Goss Stadium, equating to the nation’s longest active road winning streak. Five of the seven have come during Pac-10 play.
Against UCLA
Head Coach Pat Casey is 18-20 lifetime against the Bruins, accounting for all but three of the team’s all-time victories against UCLA. Prior to his arrival in 1995, OSU was 3-11 against the Bruins.
Notes Of Importance
• Oregon State’s 30 wins is good for ninth nationally, and sixth amongst BCS programs. The team’s .789 winning percentage stands fifth nationally.
• UCLA is ranked 24th and will give the Beavers their 11th, 12th and 13th games against top-25 foes this season. OSU is 9-1 in such games, and 5-1 away from Goss Stadium.
• The Beavers have gone 6-3 over their last nine games at UCLA. Prior to that, OSU held a 3-11 record at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
• An OSU win Friday would give the Beavers a 31-8 record, tying the 2005 and 2007 teams for the best mark over 39 games.
• Ben Wetzler and James Nygren did not issue a walk Tuesday, the second time in the last three games OSU pitchers have not issued a walk.
• OSU is 16-2 when throwing a quality start.
