Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State women's basketball program welcomes three junior college transfers in Quortni Fambro (Decatur, Ga.), Mollee Schwegler (Rainier, Ore.) and ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley (Lapwai, Idaho) to the 2011-12 squad, announced Wednesday by Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck.
"We are excited about how our first recruiting class is coming together," Rueck said. "Not only are these student-athletes gifted basketball players who have each won at high levels, they are tremendous individuals who exemplify the qualities we seek in our program. They each come to us from very well coached and highly successful programs and will have significant roles as we continue to build our foundation. This is a great day for our program.
Quortni Fambro (Decatur, Ga./Redan HS/Alabama State/Northwest Florida State College) 5-8 Guard
Quortni Fambro averaged 10.4 points per game to lead her team, shooting 40 percent last season at Northwest Florida State College, who finished runner-up in the state tournament. She was named All-Panhandle First Team, adding academic All-State honors and honored in Who's Who in Academics of American Junior Colleges.
"Quortni is an extremely strong and athletic combo guard who is a gifted scorer and an outstanding defender," Rueck said. "She has the ability to shoot the deep three and also get to the rim and finish. She has an infectious energy and is always looking to embrace and attack the next challenge.
Fambro transferred from Alabama State, where as a true freshman she averaged 3.8 points per game and 1.4 rebounds.
"I chose Oregon State because when I came on my visit I loved the environment and the people," Fambro said. "I thought it would be a great opportunity to get out of the South - since the furthest I've ever traveled is South Carolina - so it's something different for me. It means a lot to me signing with Oregon State. Coming out of high school with injuries and not getting the looks I wanted getting the opportunity to go to Oregon State is so awesome. It's going to be difficult with the level of competition, but I look forward to the challenge; I'm really excited about it."
"I'm very excited Quortni is going to Oregon State because one of the neatest things is the quality of people that work at Oregon State and the leadership and direction they get from Bob De Carolis throughout that department," Northwest Florida State College head coach Patrick Harrington said. "That makes Oregon State a very special place to work and to go to school. I hope Quortni is able to take advantage of the opportunity because Oregon State is a really neat place. I had an outstanding experience when I was there, and it's kind of nice to see someone go back there."
Mollee Schwegler (Rainier, Ore./Rainier HS/Lower Columbia College) 5-6 Guard
Mollee Schwegler comes to Oregon State after finishing her two-year career at Lower Columbia College as the all-time leading scorer with 910 points, leading her team to a 40-16 overall record, 30-2 in the NWAACC West Region. She was the unanimous NWAACC West Region MVP after leading the Red Devils to an undefeated league showing last season, averaging 16.8 points, 5.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game.
"Mollee is a pure point guard who is a prolific scorer and one of the best passers we have seen," Rueck said. "She is an extremely talented two-sport collegiate athlete and is a proven winner at both the high school and collegiate level. Mollee is a tenacious competitor and possesses an elite work ethic.
Schwegler also plays for the softball team, hitting .342 as a freshman with six home runs and 15 stolen bases, earning second team all-league honors. At Rainier High School, she played five sports over five years, competing in soccer, basketball and softball as a freshman; volleyball, basketball and softball as a sophomore and junior; and football, volleyball, basketball and softball as a senior.
"I'm really excited about coming to Oregon State," Schwegler said. "It's close to home, and I really like the campus and the feel. And I really like the coaching staff."
ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley (Lapwai, Idaho/Lewiston HS/North Idaho Junior College) 6-2 Forward
ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley joins the Beavers after leading her North Idaho squad to back-to-back NJCAA Tournament appearances and the 2011 NJCAA Championship with a career-best 17 points in the title game and high 14 rebounds in the semifinals. She averaged 8.6 points per game, adding 5.3 rebounds during the regular season, while stepping up her game at the tournament to post 7.8 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game.
"ShaKiana is a gifted athlete and has versatility that sets her apart," Rueck said. "She can guard anyone on the floor and has the ability to score facing up or with her back to the basket. ShaKiana will help us fill the void left by El Sara Greer's graduation and is ready to take on that challenge.
"I liked the whole atmosphere, the style of play and coaching style at Oregon State," Edwards-Teasley said. "I'm very excited to play at Oregon State, especially in the Pac-10. I've always wanted to play in the Pac-10 since I was younger, so I'm glad I'm getting the opportunity. The girls on the team were really nice and inviting, and I had a good time with them. They seem to enjoy it a lot, too, which helps, and you can tell they all care about each other."
