CORVALLIS -
Several Oregon State athletic teams will face new challenges Friday, April 22 in the annual Wheel-A-Thon in the Memorial Union Quad.
The 2011 Wheel-A-Thon Challenge is a three-day event designed to raise disability awareness. Wednesday featured local health professionals, Thursday’s racing involved Greek Life and Friday’s session will include representatives from Oregon State athletics.
The OSU gymnastics team is scheduled to participate at 12 p.m., the men’s soccer team will take the course at 2 p.m. and the swimming team will face the challenge at 4:30 p.m.
Participants sit in a wheelchair and race around an obstacle course simulating everyday activities people in wheelchairs face on a daily basis. The race lasts for 20 minutes.
Proceeds from the Wheel-A-Thon are split between two OSU programs: the MS Clinic, which focuses on providing modified personal exercise for people diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and IMPACT, which provides a fun way for children with developmental disabilities to engage in physical activity.
The Wheel-A-Thon is presented by the Oregon State University Pre-Therapy Allied Health Club. More information can be found on the club’s Facebook page @ OSU Pre-Therapy and Allied Health Club.
