April 2, 2011
CORVALLIS -
When the dust settled Saturday night following the Corvallis Regional of the 2011 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships, as the teams and participants waited for the awards ceremony, Oregon State Gymnastics continued to rake in recognition for the incredible season the Beavers have enjoyed.
Oregon State coaches Tanya and Michael Chaplin were selected for the Division I West Region Coach of the Year Award, junior Leslie Mak garnered West Region Gymnast of the Year and OSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Marianne Vydra, it was announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Saturday evening.
The Beavers, who were ranked No. 8 in the preseason, climbed to No. 3 in the nation after winning the Pac-10 Championships two weeks ago for the first time since 1996. Oregon State has gone undefeated since finishing second in a three-team meet at the IGI Chicago Style Invitational, Feb. 11. During that streak the Beavers have notched 19 wins including six over top 10 teams including current-No. 4 Stanford twice and defending national champion UCLA twice.
The NACGC award is the second time Tanya Chaplin has been recognized by her peers in recent weeks having received the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award after the Beavers’ Pac-10 title.
Mak, who is tied for No. 1 in the nation on the balance beam, is No. 8 in the all-around and is tied for No. 9 on the uneven bars, adds to her growing number of accolades for her 2011 performance. Mak was named as the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year after winning the all-around and beam titles and tying for the bars title as the Pac-10 Championships two weeks ago.
Vydra received the West Region’s Administrator of the Year.
