Women's Golf Back In Action At Pac-10 Championships

April 15, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's golf team travels to Tempe, Ariz., to compete at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships Sunday through Tuesday.
The tournament is hosted by Arizona State University and will be played at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, which is a par-72, 6,230-yard layout. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will include 18 holes per day with tee times at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th holes.
"We are definitely looking forward to playing at Karsten Golf Club," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Having just played there a couple of weeks ago has allowed us to work on the parts of our game that will prepare us for the conference championship. We know this is the most competitive conference in women's golf so we will measure our success by the scores we shoot rather than the finish.
"I believe this group of Oregon State players are the most talented we have had in a long time," Alexander added. "As a team, they have the second-lowest scoring average in the history of the program and seven shots lower per round than last year's team score. The great news is that they will all be back next year, along with three very talented incoming freshmen. So, as we head to Phoenix, we anticipate continuing to improve and gain valuable experience on this young and very talented team."
The Beavers will continue with its lineup of junior Whitney French, sophomores Rachael Fischer and Chelsey Lind and freshmen Seshia Telles and Lauren Sewell.
"We know the course better now because we have played it before," Sewell said about the Beavers most recent tournament at the PING/ASU Invitational. "During our previous trip, we were able to experience different weather conditions during that time, so I am confident that the team will be prepared for anything. This is a great opportunity to be a part of and I want to go out there and try my best by putting up a solid personal score."
"Playing the course five times, the team has been able to learn the course each time," Telles said. "I am now able to look at each hole with a different angle than before, which I think will benefit me for this upcoming tournament. For my first time in the Pac-10 Championships, I want to attack everything and shoot low. As a team, I know we are capable of playing very well at this course. During our last tournament there, Oregon State was the most improved team on the second day when we shot a 4-over as a team. I am confident that our team will go into this tournament with a lot of confidence."
The field includes five teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation -- No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC, No. 7 Arizona, No. 9 California and No. 10 Arizona State -- and five of the top 10 individual golfers in the nation.
Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com throughout the tournament.
