Kevin McShane Awarded Scholarship For Senior Season

April 12, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kevin McShane, who walked-on to the Oregon State men's basketball team in 2008, has been awarded a scholarship for his senior season, head coach Craig Robinson announced today.
"Kevin is the only player who came in when we got here three years ago," Robinson said. "He has done a tremendous job on and off the court and has been terrific in the classroom and in practice to earn some starters minutes. We really look forward to have him continue his leadership that he has exhibited since he joined our program."
McShane is a two-time team captain and has played 68 career games for Oregon State after spending one season at Clackamas Community College as a grey-shirt in 2007-08. He was only one of two Beaver players to play in all 31 games this past season and averaged 0.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
"It's been something I've wanted since I was a kid," McShane said. "I thought being a scholarship athlete is how you make it. When I got here, I realized it wasn't about being a scholarship athlete; it was about working hard and leading by example. But it all meant a lot and made my dream come true when I put the pen to paper today."
The Portland, Ore., native has quickly become a crowd favorite with his energy, hustle and enthusiasm on the court. Off the court, he was recently named Chair of the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will represent Oregon State and the conference in the upcoming year. He was also honored as an Oregon State "everyday champion" earlier this year.
McShane will be the only senior on the team next season and is the first student-athlete added to the roster when Robinson took the job. "When I took the job, Kevin and his dad met with me about him walking onto the team," Robinson said. "Kevin always wanted to come to Oregon State. That's one of the benefits of being at a state school. You have kids who are indigenous to the population who want to go to Oregon State and Kevin is the perfect example of that."
Like always, McShane was quick to give thanks to others. "The coaches have always been supportive of me since day one and have acknowledged my leadership to the program on and off the court," he said. "I would like to thank them for doing this and I look forward to my last year when I know we will do some very special things."
