Corvallis, Ore. -
By Kyli Millender, for osubeavers.com
California native and greyshirt freshman Donell (D.J.) Welch has adapted to his new home at Oregon State, and is enjoying his first spring football session as a Beaver. In high school he was not only voted the league’s most valuable defensive lineman, but also broke track records in the 100 and 200-meters. A chance to play for a Football Bowl Subdivision (Division 1) school on scholarship and the family atmosphere of the football program are among the reasons he is at Oregon State, and he hopes to do the best he can for the team and become a team leader.

What are your goals for this season?
“Basically,  just to get better and work for the team and try to play. I want to do my best to play.”

After losing some key linebackers from last year’s team, what kind of impact do you anticipate making this season?
“Just being strong and trying to be a team leader --  to do the best for my team.”

What is the most important thing every linebacker needs to know?
“To know the line and know what they’re going to do in front of you -- read what’s happening in front of you.”

Where do you see yourself fitting into Oregon State football?
“I’ll fit in well because it seems like the defense here is fast-paced, really smart and easy to pick up.”
What does having a football scholarship mean to you?
“It means a lot. A lot of people don’t get this kind of opportunity. It’s like winning the lottery.”
How has the adjustment been coming to Oregon State?
“It’s been weird because I’m from the desert. It’s cold, but I love it so far.”
What motivates you?
“The fact that I’m up here and I have a chance to play at a D1 university.”
How do you spend your free time?
“Either trying to learn plays, doing homework or hanging out with friends.”
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
“Ray Lewis, because he’s an energetic player and he never gives up. He’s older than a lot of people and he still plays like he’s the youngest.”
Where is one place you have never been, but want to go?
“Hawai’i.”
What do you hope to do after college?
“Hopefully have a degree in communications and go into broadcasting, if I don’t make it to the next level first.”
