No. 17 Men's Crew to Row at San Diego Crew Classic

The Oregon State’s men’s rowing team, ranked 17th in the nation, takes to the waters of Mission Bay in sunny San Diego this weekend to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic, April 2-3.
“The San Diego Crew Classic is a great early season regatta,” head coach Steve Todd said. “It bring teams from around the country that we otherwise wouldn’t get to see … at least not until the national championships.”
On Saturday, the Beavers’ Varsity 8+ races against No. 2 California, Michigan and Bucknell in Heat ‘A’ for the Copley Cup at 8:30 a.m. Junior Varsity 8+ rows against Orange Coast College, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, USC for the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup at 10:10 a.m. OSU’s third boat in San Diego is the Freshman 8+, which races against California, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara for the Sharp Cabrillo Cup at 11:10 a.m.
The Beavers’ annual trip to San Diego and the six-lane course in Mission Bay provides an excellent opportunity to prepare for the postseason.
“I think our guys are excited to get into a six-lane racing situation instead of the head-to-head dual races we’ve had this year. This will be our one opportunity before Pac-10 Championships to have a six-lane, multi-boat situation. We have a lot more variability and a lot of different crews to challenge ourselves with.”

In addition to the three crews in San Diego, two more crews will row in the Husky Open Invitational in Seattle Saturday morning. The Beavers’ Varsity 4+ and Second Freshman 8+ boats will row in Seattle.
