Last Game
Carter Bell tallied his sixth multiple-hit game of the 2011 campaign, but the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team left 14 on base in a 8-3 loss to UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium. Nevertheless, the Beavers came away with a series win over the Gauchos. Bell went 2-for-5 Sunday and finished the weekend with five hits in three games against the Gauchos. Offensively, however, OSU did little to capitalize on their its hits. Danny Hayes and Andrew Susac each produced run-scoring singles.
Gaviglio Vs. Heyer
Friday’s matchup will produce a duel between two of the nation’s top starters: OSU’s Sam Gaviglio and Arizona’s Kurt Heyer. Both are in the top 10 nationally in strikeouts (Heyer, 60, and Gaviglio, 51). Together, they have combined to allow nine earned runs in 93 2/3 innings (ERA of 0.86).
More On Gaviglio
Sam Gaviglio is having a banner season. His 51 strikeouts is four shy of tying his best of 55 in 2009 and he has thrown 46 1/3 innings, less than 17 full than his career-best of 62 2/3 in in 2009. Opponents are batting a paltry .128 against him and have 20 hits, with only one going for extra bases.
Lately Against Arizona
Oregon State is 6-3 against Arizona since 2008 after getting swept in Tucson in 2007. Arizona and OSU first met in 1963, and the Wildcats won eight of the first 11 matchups. Since 1998, the series is pretty evenly matched with Arizona posting a 20-19 advantage.
Pac-10 Openers
Oregon State has been quite successful in league opening games since the Pac-10 unified in 1999, going 7-5. The Beavers have won their last three Pac-10 openers, including a 4-1 decision at USC last season.
Notes Of Importance
• Sam Gaviglio needs two quality starts to equal the number Greg Peavey had to lead the Beavers in that category in 2010.
• OSU is 6-0 in games Sam Gaviglio has started in 2011, and has averaged 6.3 runs scored in those games.
• OSU is looking to start April strong as the 2010 club went 4-10. Dating back to 1982, the Beavers have not had two straight seasons with losing records in the month of April.
• Danny Hayes carries an eight-game hit streak into the series while Kavin Keyes is at four games. He can have his second five-gamer.
