Last Game
Ben Wetzler threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Ryan Barnes drove in two runs with a 2-for-3 effort as the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Seattle, 4-2, to close out a two-game midweek series Wednesday at Goss Stadium. Wetzler made his first career appearance in relief in his sixth game of 2011, and limited the Redhawks to three hits and a walk. He threw 55 pitches to pick up the win and improved to 3-1 on the year. He came on in relief of Scott Schultz in the fourth, and picked up the final two outs in the inning.
Hayes Joins The Five-Game Club
Danny Hayes became the fifth Beaver with at least one five-game hit streak when he went 2-for-4 Wednesday and is 9-for-20 (.450) during his streak.
A Look At Sam Gaviglio
Sam Gaviglio takes his 38 consecutive scoreless innings to the mound Friday. He needs five innings to break into the top four in NCAA D-I history and 9 2/3 to tie Tennessee’s Todd Helton for the most in a single season (1994). Helton’s 47 2/3 innings came against 26 different teams. UC Santa Barbara will be Gaviglio’s sixth opponent in 2011.
History Vs. UCSB
Oregon State has an 11-8-1 advantage all-time against the Gauchos, and has won the last five games. However, no player has ever faced UCSB as the teams last met in 2005.
Out Like A Lion
The Beavers can end the month of March on a high note against the Gauchos and make it their best month since April of 2006. OSU has the potential for a 14-2 month, which would be just shy of the 15 wins in April ‘06. OSU’s most wins in March dating back to 1982 is 13 in 1985.
Notes Of Importance
• Each of the Beavers’ five losses have come by one run this season. That’s a program first. OSU lost its first three games by one run each in 1971 and 1991.
• OSU is 5-5 in games decided by two runs or less. It is 1-5 in one-run games.
• Pitcher Sam Gaviglio is the lone pitcher nationally with the requisite number of qualifying innings who has yet to allow an earned run.
• Gaviglio is also leading the nation with a batting average against of .107. He has allowed just 14 hits, with one a double.
• The OSU bullpen has a 1.80 ERA in 30 innings at home in 2011.
• OSU is 9-4 against right-handed starters, who it is scheduled to face in all three games.
