Sam Gaviglio Named Pac-10 Pitcher Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon by league commissioner Larry Scott.
The award is the second of the day after he earned Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger National Player of the week honors Monday morning. They come on the heels of his complete-game shutout of Long Beach State Friday night. He took a perfect game into the eighth inning, and ended the game with just one hit allowed.
Gaviglio faced 28 batters in the win, which pushed his season record to 4-0. He did not walk a batter, threw first-pitch strikes to 24 of the 28 batters he faced and went to a three-ball count just twice. The right-hander struck out the side in the first and third innings and needed just 101 pitches to throw the complete game, which was his second of the season.
In shutting out the Dirtbags, Gaviglio extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 38 innings. He has yet to give up an earned run this season - allowing just two unearned runs in the season opener against Gonzaga. He is the only pitcher nationally who has thrown a significant number of innings and who has yet to allow an earned run.
The Pac-10 honor is his second of the season; he picked up his first after throwing a two-hitter against then-No. 14 Connecticut on Feb. 25. It's the third of his career and the 64th Pitcher of the Week honor for the Beavers since the Pac-10 began the award starting in 1986; OSU's tally is second only to Stanford's 75.
Gaviglio and Oregon State return to Goss Stadium Tuesday to start a two-game midweek series with Seattle. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT.
