Moore Fires School-Record 63 To Lead Oregon Duck Invitational

March 21, 2011
EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Alex Moore fired a 9-under 63 on Monday, the lowest round in Oregon State history, and leads the Oregon Duck Invitational going into Tuesday's final round.
Moore had an eagle, nine birdies and two bogies in the afternoon round at the par-72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club, after posting a 1-over 73 in the morning round. His 63 is the lowest round in school history, surpassing an 8-under 64 by Tim Mickelson in 2000, a 7-under 64 by Charles Kingsbaker in 1997 and a 7-under 65 by Jonathan Green in 2004.
"Alex is the story," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "He was on and it was fun to watch. To get to 7-under is great, but to birdie the last two holes and get to 9-under is awesome. To shoot 63 out here with as wet and long as the golf course was playing is incredible."
The Beavers had the second best afternoon round with a 5-under 283 to finish the first two rounds at 5-over 298-283--581 and trail only top-ranked Oklahoma State (6-under 570), Oregon (3-under 573) and Washington (even-par 576).
Moore started on the third hole and was 7-under through his first 11 holes before bogeying the 14th and 15th holes. He came back with birdies on 16 and 17, pared the 18th and finished with birdies on his final two holes, including one on the par-3 second hole that Reehoorn said "was playing about 220 and he hits a 3-iron in there tight and makes birdie for a great way to finish a great round."
He has the clubhouse lead with an 8-under 73-63--136 going into Tuesday's final round by two strokes over Chris Williams of Washington, who finished with a 6-under 67-71--138, and three strokes ahead of Robbie Ziegler of Oregon, who had a 5-under 73-66--139.
Sophomore Nick Sherwood sits in a tie for 11th with a 1-under 74-69--143, junior Casey King shot a 4-over 75-73--148 and is tied for 34th, freshman David Fink finished with a 13-over 157 and sophomore Jeff Petroff had a 14-over 158.
"It was a great job by our guys to come back in the afternoon," Reehoorn said. "The No. 1 team in the country (Oklahoma State) shot a 9-under and we shot a 5-under so we were right there with them. By no means are we as good or as deep as Oklahoma State, but at least now our guys know we can compete with them. Knowing we can compete with these kind of teams is huge."
Playing as individuals, junior Jonnie Motomochi shot a 3-over 74-73--147 and freshman Travis Milleman had a 15-over 78-81--159 to sit in a tie for 28th and a tie for 81st, respectively.
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
