Baseball Ranked 23rd By Baseball America; Gaviglio Named National Player Of The Week By Collegiate Baseball

March 21, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team, on the heels of a series victory over Long Beach State, is ranked in Baseball America's Top 25 for the first time this season. The Beavers are No. 23, one of six teams from the Pacific-10 Conference.
The Beavers also find themselves ranked 22nd in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll. That's also a first for Oregon State this season.
Sam Gaviglio, meanwhile, was named one of five national players of the week by Collegiate Baseball, sponsored by Louisville Slugger.
Gaviglio began Oregon State's weekend on the right foot as the right-hander took a perfect game into the eighth inning Friday night in OSU's 4-0 victory. He allowed one hit - a single in the eighth - and ended the game with 14 strikeouts, the most by a Beavers' pitcher since 2001.
Gaviglio extended his scoreless innings streak to 38 innings and is now 4-0 on the year with a 0.00 ERA. He is the lone Division I pitcher to not have allowed an earned run thus far (with the qualifying number of innings).
It is the second game this season in which he has allowed two hits or less; on Feb. 25, he held then-No. 14 Connecticut to two hits and was subsequently named the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Oregon State returns to Goss Stadium Tuesday to start a two-game midweek series with Seattle First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT.
