Sam Gaviglio Named Golden Spikes National Spotlight Player Of The Week

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The honors just keep on coming for Oregon State junior pitcher Sam Gaviglio.
The right-hander has already picked up the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week award and was named as one five national players of the week by Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger.
Now, on Monday afternoon, he has earned Baseball America's Golden Spikes National Spotlight Player Of The Week honor as announced by USA Baseball. It's the first of Gaviglio's career and Oregon State's second in as many seasons after Greg Peavey was honored after shutting out Tennessee in 2010.
Gaviglio's awards come on the heels of his complete-game shutout of Long Beach State Friday night. He took a perfect game into the eighth inning, and ended the game with just one hit allowed.
Gaviglio faced 28 batters in the win, which pushed his season record to 4-0. He did not walk a batter, threw first-pitch strikes to 24 of the 28 batters he faced and went to a three-ball count just twice. The right-hander struck out the side in the first and third innings and needed just 101 pitches to throw the complete game, which was his second of the season.
In shutting out the Dirtbags, Gaviglio extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 38 innings. He has yet to give up an earned run this season - allowing just two unearned runs in the season opener against Gonzaga. He is the only pitcher nationally who has thrown a significant number of innings and who has yet to allow an earned run.
Gaviglio and Oregon State return to Goss Stadium Tuesday to start a two-game midweek series with Seattle. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT.
