Men's Golf Concludes First Day At Bandon Dunes Championship

March 11, 2011
BANDON, Ore. - The Oregon State men's golf team is tied for fourth place after the first two rounds at the 16-team Bandon Dunes Championship being held Friday and Saturday.
The Beavers shot a 4-over 292 in the morning round and an 8-over 296 in the afternoon round and are tied with Colorado with a 12-over 588 at the par-72, 6,798-yard Bandon Dunes Course. The final 18 holes of the two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on Saturday.
"The conditions this morning were absolutely perfect for the first hour or two with no wind, but we didn't capitalize so we missed an opportunity there," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "With that being said, I think we did okay. I felt like the course was playing a lot harder in the afternoon, but in both rounds we were missing one score. We just need another score and we could have been much better."
Freshman David Fink kept up his consistent play of the spring season with a 1-over 73-72--145 and is tied for 11th overall, while sophomore Nick Sherwood fired a team-best, 2-under 70 in the morning round is tied for 15th with a 2-over 70-76--146. Junior Alex Moore was one of a handful of players to shoot under-par in tough conditions in the afternoon round with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 25th.
"David is a competitor and Mr. Consistent," Reehoorn said. "As a freshman, with what he's doing, he is someone we can always count on to shoot around par. Nick did a great job this morning and had one bad swing in the afternoon that resulted in a triple-bogey. Alex played solid but put one in the pot bunker and got an eight. The wind was gusting 25 to 30 miles per hour in the afternoon, so that 71 was very good."
Juniors Casey King and Jonnie Motomochi are tied for 37th and 58th, respectively, while sophomore Jeff Petroff shot a 4-over 74-74--148 as an individual.
Washington shot a 10-under 281-285--566 and has a sizeable lead over Florida (2-under 574) and Oregon (5-over 581). Charlie Hughes of Washington is the only player to shoot in the 60's in both rounds and leads individually with a 9-under 67-68--135.
The final 18 holes will be played on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
"They are predicting rain for tomorrow so we need to grind it out and fight for every shot," Reehoorn said. "With the rain and wind tomorrow, it's going to be tough. We just need to have four guys who can have a solid round."
